The hits came early and often for the Cerritos
College softball team, as they posted a 12-1,
5-inning, non-conference win over Santiago
Canyon College at Nancy Kelly Field on Monday
afternoon. The Falcons (5-1), who host Riverside
College at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, broke open a
close 2-1 game with a pair of runs in the second
inning and then added eight more in the third.
Sophomore catcher
Samantha Vaaulu
(Warren HS) got the scoring started
with a two-run blast over the left-field wall in
the bottom of the first inning. After sophomore
shortstop
Cassandra Godoy (Downey
HS) led off with a base hit and stole
second, Vaaulu lofted her first home of the
early season to give sophomore pitcher
Hillary
Perez-Ashley (Long Beach
Poly HS) an early cushion.
Perez-Ashley, who improved to 4-0, withstood an
early hitting attack by the Hawks (1-4), who
stranded two runners in the first inning and
loaded the bases with no outs in the second.
After a fielder's choice cancelled out the lead
runner for the first out, Cara Methwen singled
home the lone run for Santiago Canyon.
Perez-Ashley worked out of the jam by inducing a
pop out by Lauren Villreal and then struck out Brandice Cutspec
to end the rally.
Sophomores
Ashley Ventura (Carson
HS) and
Lauren Marquez (Gahr
HS) each drove in a run in the third
inning, while it was a grand slam by freshman
Gabby Villarreal (St.
Joseph HS) that closed out the scoring.
Prior to that, sophomore
Devin Salmones
(Gahr HS) drove in a pair with a
single, joining Godoy and Ventura, who each
collected RBI hits.
