The Cerritos College softball team put five runs
on the board in the bottom of the third inning,
which helped propel them to an 8-0, 5-inning
non-conference win over Riverside College on
Wednesday afternoon at Nancy Kelly Field. The
win improved the team's record to 6-1 on the
year, while the Tigers fell to 0-1. The team
will now travel to Antelope Valley College for a
3:00 p.m. non-conference game on Friday.
The inning started with a pair of singles by
sophomore shortstop
Cassandra Godoy (Downey HS)
and sophomore outfielder
Devin Salmones (Gahr HS).
Sophomore catcher
Samantha Vaaulu (Warren HS)
followed with an RBI double, while sophomore
second baseman
Lindsay Marquez (Gahr HS)
collected a sacrifice fly. The inning wound up
with sophomore third baseman
Brandi Rummel (La
Serna HS) doubling in a pair of runs.
That was all the cushion freshman pitcher
Jessica Lozano (Banning HS)
would need, as she limited the Tigers to just
three singles, while she struck out two. With
the complete game win, Lozano improved to 2-1.
The trio of Godoy, Salmones and Vaaulu each led
the way with a pair of hits at the top of the
order, while the Falcons also received four
walks.
The matchup was also the meeting of a pair of
teams that advanced to the State Tournament last
year. The Falcons posted a 10-4 win in their
only meeting in the post-season.
