Over the course of the 2010 season, the Cerritos
College softball team had been undefeated at
Nancy Kelly Field. After their 5-3 win
over Grossmont College in the first game of the
Super Regional on Friday, the Falcons were 21-0
at home and had won their last 29 straight
games. On Saturday, the top-ranked Falcons
dropped a 4-1 decision to Fullerton College in
the championship semi-finals and then saw their
season come to an end with a 6-5 loss to South
Coast Conference rival Mt. San Antonio College.
Cerritos ends their season with a 39-6 record.
Trailing 6-1 heading into the bottom of the
seventh inning, the Falcons put together their
first rally of the day, as they scored four
times and had State Co-Player of the Year
Samantha Garcia (St. Joseph HS)
at the plate with runners on first and second
base. Garcia lined a shot into left-center
field, which was caught by Mountie
centerfielder Korrine Randazzo to end the game
and the season for Cerritos. Mt. San Antonio
(33-11) scored three times in the top of the
seventh for their 6-1 lead.
The Falcons had their fair share of chances to
take the lead before the seventh inning, but
left the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth
innings with the deficit only being 3-1. In the
fifth, Cerritos loaded the bases on pair of
walks and a bunt single by sophomore shortstop
Cassandra Godoy (Downey HS).
But sophomore first baseman
Ashley Ventura (Carson HS) and
sophomore catcher
Samantha Vaaulu (Warren HS)
couldn't get the ball out of the infield, as
they both popped up.
In the sixth inning, a single, walk and
fielder's choice loaded the bases with one out.
However, freshman outfielder
Natalie Garcia (Mayfair HS)
struck out and Samantha Garcia grounded out to
end the threat. The Mounties then put three runs
on the board in the seventh, with two coming on
a home run by Christie Nieto.
Unable to generate much offense against Mt. SAC
starting pitcher Alexa Limon, Cerritos finally
got to her in the seventh after a Godoy walk and
a two-run home run by Ventura. Carrisa Bronson
came on and recorded the first out before
sophomore second baseman
Lindsey Marquez (Gahr HS)
walked, followed by a base hit from sophomore
outfielder
Devin Salmones (Gahr HS).
After the second out was recorded, sophomore
third baseman
Brandi Rummel (La Serna HS)
drove in a run with a base hit, as did Natalie
Garcia. But Samantha Garcia's line drive found
the glove of Randazzo to end the game.
Starting pitcher
Jessica Lozano (Banning HS)
took the loss, as she allowed three runs on
seven hits in four inning of work and left with
the team trailing. Sophomore
Hillary Perez-Ashley (Long
Beach Poly HS), who took the loss in the
first game of the day, surrendered the final
three runs.
In that loss to the Hornets, the Falcons had no
answer for pitcher Kelsey Marker, who allowed
just six hits and struck out three to earn the
win. Cerritos left runners at third base in the
first two innings and didn't get their third hit
of the game until after 10 straight batters were
sent down. Trailing 2-0, Samantha Garcia led off
the sixth with a triple and came home on a base
hit by Vaaulu, to get to within 2-1.
Fullerton answered with a pair of runs in the
top of the seventh inning on a two-run double by
Jackie Munoz, who drove in three runs in the
game.
