08.05.11 - Jessica Lozano receives Nancy Kelly
Scholarship
Since
2003, former Cerritos College softball coach
Nancy Kelly has been awarding a scholarship
in her name to a sophomore softball player to help
in the aid of purchasing textbooks and supplies
after transferring to a four-year university. After
a season where she was named the South Coast
Conference Pitcher of the Year and earned All-State
recognition, Jessica Lozano (Banning
HS) was named the recipient of this year's
scholarship.
Those eligible for the scholarship must have played
two seasons for the Falcon softball team and are
required to submit a personal statement, as well as
their transcripts and a letter of recommendation
from at least one of their professors. Lozano turned
in the required information and was notified by
Kelly herself that she would be receiving the
scholarship.
"I was really surprised and happy when Coach Kelly
contacted me to let me know I would be getting the
scholarship," said Lozano, who posted a 30-8 record
this season and helped Cerritos to a 34-12 record
and advanced to the Super Regional before being
eliminated from the playoffs. "I knew that the
scholarship was available, but I never thought I
would get it. (Head coach) Kodee Murray
gave the sophomores a flier with all of the
requirements and I went ahead and did everything it
asked."...[more]

Mt. SAC
With the winds blowing
out at Mt. San Antonio College on Sunday, the
Cerritos College softball team was looking to get
the ball up in the air and see what might happen in

advance
Faced with the
possibility of being eliminated from the Southern
California Regional Playoffs in the first round,
Cerritos College sophomore pitcher
Jessica
Lozano (Banning HS) knew she
had to be in the circle and win twice on Sunday for
her team to advance. Lozano, who missed the first
game on Saturday with an injury, pitched 12 innings
over two games and helped the Falcons defeat
Bakersfield College, 4-1 and 11-1 to advance to the
Super Regional next weekend. The site and teams in
the four-team double-elimination will be determined

Field. The win was the second in three days that the
Falcons (6-5, 2-0) clubbed four home runs in a game
and marked their second win in a row after suffering
three setbacks in a row. On Tuesday, the team posted
a 17-0 win over Pasadena City College in their
conference opener. Weather permitting, Cerritos will
compete in the Palm Springs Tournament and open with
games on Friday against Saddleback College (3:30
p.m.) and Moorpark College (6:00 p.m.).
After a scoreless first inning, Cerritos exploded
for six runs in the second inning, highlighted by
two-run home runs from freshman catcher
Jessica
Roper (Mayfair HS) and
sophomore outfielder
Natalie
Garcia (Mayfair HS). Roper's
laser of a home run over the center field fence had
fans thinking they were watching former catcher
Samantha Vaaulu, who spent the last two seasons
breaking all offensive numbers. In fact, both
players wear the same number (17), although Roper is
a left-handed hitter...[more]
02.15.11 - Falcons explode for 17 runs
The Cerritos College softball team
broke out of their offensive slump on Tuesday in
their South Coast Conference opener against Pasadena
City College on Tuesday with four home runs and a
17-0 win in five innings. The Falcons (5-5, 1-0)
also snapped a three-game losing streak and will
look for their second win in a row on Thursday at
3:00 p.m. when they host El Camino College.
The offensive barrage started in the first inning
after sophomore center fielder
Natalie Garcia (Mayfair HS) led off with a walk, followed by a double from freshman second baseman
Stephanie Aguirre (Banning HS). Freshman shortstop
Briana Quintana (Mayfair HS) singled in Garcia, while the throw from center fielder Maycee Murphy was off line and allowed Aguirre to score and Quintana to move to third base. Freshman catcher
Jessica Roper (Mayfair HS) brought home Quintana with a sacrifice fly before freshman left fielder
Courtney Priddie (Long Beach Poly HS) singled, stole second base, advanced to third in a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch...[more]
02.11.11 - Cerritos drops third in a row
The Cerritos
College softball team had no answer for Riverside
College leadoff hitter Patti Manser, who went
3-for-3 and drove in both runs in a 2-1 win for the
Tigers in a non-conference game on Friday. The
Falcons (4-5), who dropped their third game in a
row, scored their lone run in the top of the seventh
inning and left the tying run on first base.
Cerritos will look to snap their skid on Tuesday at
3:00 p.m. when they host Pasadena City College in
their South Coast Conference opener...[more]
02.09.11 - Rare shutout tossed against Falcons
In
the last four years, the Cerritos College softball
team has been considered one of the state's elite
teams, which includes a state championship in 2008.
During that time, the Falcons have only been shut
out 12 times. Make that 13 times, after Palomar
College posted a 5-0 non-conference win on Wednesday
at Nancy Kelly Field. The loss drops Cerritos to 4-4
on the year, while the Comets improved to 5-1. The
team will now travel to Riverside College on Friday
for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference game...[more]
02.04.11 - Late rally not enough to record win
Down 6-2 after three innings, the Cerritos College
softball team staged a comeback over the final four
innings, but came up short in a 6-5 non-conference
loss at Grossmont College on Friday. The Falcons
(4-3) will now host Palomar College at 3:00 p.m. on
Wednesday in a non-conference game...[more]
02.03.11 - Cerritos scores winning run on error
With two outs and
a runner at second base in a 7-7 tie game in the
bottom of the seventh inning, Santa Ana College
pitcher Asia Alvarez handled the one-hopper hit by
freshman shortstop Briana
Quintana (Mayfair HS) cleanly.
But her throw to first baseman Emma Lwin was low and
got rolled away, which allowed sophomore outfielder Aina I'aulualo
(Lynwood HS/College of Southern Nevada) to
score the winning run for an 8-7 non-conference
victory by the Falcons at Nancy Kelly Field on
Thursday afternoon. Cerritos (4-2) will now travel
to Grossmont College tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m.
non-conference game.
Trailing 7-6 after the Dons (5-1) put four runs on
the board in the top of the fifth inning, Cerritos
drew into a tie when freshman first baseman Alexxa Sanabria
(Palm Springs HS) scored on a wild pitch
after reaching base with a lead-off double. It was
the third run of the day the Falcons scored by way
of a wild pitch...[more]
02.01.11 - Big hits lead Falcons to win
A
bases loaded triple by freshman catcher
Jessica
Roper (Mayfair HS) in the third
inning and a two-run double by freshman outfielder
Courtney Priddie (Long Beach Poly HS)
in the sixth provided the offense the Cerritos
College softball team needed in their 9-3
non-conference win at Santiago Canyon College on
Tuesday. The Falcons, who improved to 3-2 on the
year, will play their home opener on Thursday at
3:00 p.m. when they face Santa Ana College...[more]
01.29.11 - Young team splits two to open season
The
2011 version of the Cerritos College softball team
will be its youngest since the all-freshmen team of
2007 reached the state championship game. In their
first action of the year, the Falcons, who were
ranked #1 in Southern California last season before
being upset at home in the playoffs, split their
first four games at the Glendale Tournament over the
weekend. Cerritos (2-2) opened with a 9-0 win over
Chaffey College and followed that with a 5-3 win
over San Diego Mesa College. But, on the second day,
they suffered a 10-3 setback to Santa Ana College
and then a 5-3 decision against Antelope Valley
College. The team will now travel to face Santiago
Canyon College at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday...[more]
07.17.10 - Softball announces six signings
On the heels of a
season that ended earlier than expected, the
Cerritos College softball team has announced that
six of their seven sophomores have received
scholarships to four-year universities. The Falcons,
who were ranked #1 in the state heading into the
Southern California Regional Playoffs, were upset in
the Super Regional and finished the season with a
39-6 record. The combined record for the two years
of the sophomores was 80-17-1 and included two South
Coast Conference championships and a slew of
post-season accolades...[more]
