After opening the season with a pair of road wins on
Friday, the Cerritos College softball team was
unable to generate any offense in their home opening
on Saturday at Nancy Kelly Field against Saddleback
College. The Falcons (2-1) clubbed five home runs in
their second game of the season, but could only slap
out four hits against the Gauchos (1-0) and dropped
an 8-1 decision. Cerritos will now host Antelope
Valley College at 3:00 p.m. in their second game of
the day.
For Saddleback, they jumped on freshman pitcher
Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS)
for two runs in the top of the first inning, as
Mandy Gutierrez delivered a two-run double that
plated Christina Bolin and Chelsea Bertoglio. It was
5-0 before the Falcons would get on the board, as
freshman designated player Ariana
Mejia (Gahr HS) drove in the
team's lone run with a sacrifice fly.
Emily Herman opened the third inning with a triple and scored
on an infield groundout by Rachel Watson, while
pinch-hitter Kendal McElveny drove in a pair of runs
in the sixth inning with a base hit. Anna Blue
drilled a two-run home run off Cornejo (2-1) in the
seventh inning.
Cerritos had several chances to making it a game early on,
but left a pair of runners on base against Destiny Davalos
in the second and four innings. Even in the inning
they scored, the Falcons had the bases loaded with
no outs, but it was quickly two outs on
the sacrifice fly, as sophomore Alexxa Sanabria
(Palm Springs HS) was thrown out trying to
advance to second base. Sanabria collected two of
the team's four hits. Bolin went 4-for-4 for the
Gauchos.
