After struggling to generate any offense against
Saddleback College on Saturday afternoon, the
Cerritos College softball team found their groove
against Grossmont College at Nancy Kelly Field on
Tuesday. The Falcons blasted five more home runs and
clubbed 21 hits on the day, as they recorded a
19-5, five-inning non-conference win over the
Griffins (2-3). Cerritos (3-1) will now host
Santiago Canyon College at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday in
another non-conference contest.
Grossmont did take an early 1-0 lead after collecting a run
on three hits off starting pitcher
Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS).
Vanessa McHugh led off the game with a double on the
first pitch, and after a base hit by Lindsay
Thorstenson, scored on a double-steal attempt that
saw Thorstenson get thrown out after a rundown.
Cerritos responded with four runs in the bottom of
the stanza, which included an RBI ground out by
freshman third baseman Ariana
Mejia (Gahr HS), that scored
sophomore
Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS),
who led off with a double. Freshman first baseman
Andrea Arellano (Downey HS)
followed with a two-run home run, her first of two
on the day.
The runs continued to come in bunches against starting
pitcher Mariza Maldonado (1-2) and relief pitcher
Kelsey Townsend. Sophomore second baseman Alexxa Sanabria
(Palm Springs HS) drove in a run in the
second inning, as did Mejia and freshman right
fielder
Ally
Catania (Pacifica HS). The big
blast was a three-run home run from sophomore
designated player
Jackie
Flores (California HS), who
also hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Castrellon
picked up her third hit of the game with a lead-off
home run in the third inning, while Arellano added a
three-run round-tripper in the fourth inning.
Castrellon (3-for-4, three runs, RBI), Sanabria (3-for-4,
three runs, two RBI), Arellano (3-for-3, three runs,
five RBI) and Flores (3-for-3, three runs, four RBI)
all had three hits for the Falcons, while Cornejo
(3-1) pitched the first four innings and surrendered
three runs on six hits. Sonia Ray added a two-run
base hit for the Griffins in the fourth inning.
