The Cerritos College volleyball team
won their fifth consecutive South Coast Conference match
on Friday, as they defeated East Los Angeles College,
30-20, 29-31, 30-23, 30-16. With the win, the Falcons
are now 8-7 on the year and 7-2 in the SCC, while they
have now jumped to #18 in the state rankings. The team
will look to continue their current streak when they
host Los Angeles City College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Leading the way for the Falcons in
the win was sophomore outside hitter
Terri Del
Conte (Lakewood
HS), who drilled home 18 kills with just
four errors and also had 15 digs. She came through
whenever the team needed a big point, as did her outside
hitting partner, sophomore
Jennifer
Espinoza (Santa
Fe HS). The two have been on fire during the
winning streak, with Espinoza finishing with 14 kills
and 15 digs in the victory over the Huskies. As
effective as the two have been, they have been
complimented nicely by sophomore middle blocker
Le'Sauna
Johnson (Long
Beach Poly HS), who contributed 11 kills,
two solo blocks and two assisted blocks. If opponents
are looking to shut down the outside, Johnson has been
there to record kills from the middle of the net.
Freshman
Kristin
Mendoza (St.
Paul HS) made the most of her opportunities
against East LA, recording seven kills in 14 attempts
with just one error, while sophomore
Christal Lara
(Garfield HS)
chipped in with six kills, seven digs and three block
assists, while also handling the setting duties, and
finished the night with 44 assists. Although she
struggled at the net on the offensive side, sophomore
Yoseth
Guerrero (South
El Monte HS) led the team with four solo
blocks and two block assists to go along with her five
kills, while freshman
Hilary
Van Hofwegen (Calvary
Chapel HS) made the most of the one game she
played, as she had 11 assists and four digs. |
