After struggling through a difficult
pre-season, the Cerritos College volleyball team was
faced with the dubious task of opening their South Coast
Conference schedule with El Camino College, the
defending conference champion. The Falcons struggled
against the Warriors and were defeated in three games,
14-30, 20-30, 20-30 to fall to 1-6 on the season and 0-1
in the SCC. On Wednesday, Cerritos will host East Los
Angeles College at 5:00 p.m. in hopes to break their
current six-game losing streak.
Accounting for 15 of the team's 20
kills were sophomores
Terri Del
Conte
(Lakewood
HS)
and
Jennifer
Espinoza
(Santa
Fe HS),
who had eight and seven kills, respectively. It was a
rough match from the outset and the Falcons were on the
defensive the entire night, which is represented in
their 54 digs. Another sophomore,
Le'Sauna
Johnson
(Long
Beach Poly HS),
chipped in with three kills, while the sophomore duo of
Christal Lara
(Garfield
HS)
and
Marci Encinas
(Santa
Fe HS)
had 10 and nine assists, respectively.
On the the team's keys to success is
their effectiveness at the net, and they did not record
a solo block in the match. Freshman libero
Bridgette
Enriquez
(Downey
HS)
had 14 digs, while Espinoza (11 digs), Lara (eight), Del
Conte (eight) and Encinas (eight) all made
contributions. |
