The Cerritos College volleyball team
received double-digit kills from three
players to help lead them to a 30-21, 30-16,
25-30, 30-25 South Coast Conference win at
home on Friday against East Los Angeles
College. The victory now gives the Falcons a
5-17 record on the year, while they are 5-6
in SCC play. The team will now travel for a
3:00 p.m. game at Los Angeles City College
on Wednesday.
In the first game, the
Falcons opened up a 14-4 lead by scoring
eight straight points and rode that momentum
to a win. Freshman
Brittany Hayes (Artesia HS)
picked up five kills in the first game, en
route to 12 on the night, while sophomore
Kristin Mendoza (St. Paul HS)
was the key player in the second game.
Mendoza accounted for five of the team’s
first eight points and continued to hit the
ball well. She ended up with nine of her
game-high 16 kills in the second game, with
freshman setter
Desiree Cortez (Elizabeth
Learning Center HS) getting her the ball
on multiple plays.
Leading 15-10 in the third game,
Cerritos saw the Huskies take advantage of
some poor passing and serve reception to get
themselves back into the game. The Falcons
led, 22-18 at one point, but surrendered six
straight points. They were able to tie the
match at 25-25, but allowed five consecutive
points to lose the game.
It
was another close contest in the fourth
game, but the Falcons broke an 18-17 game by
scoring three straight points. Freshman
Julie Reich (La Mirada HS)
picked up a kill and service ace, while
freshman
Megan Hayes (Artesia HS) came
on strong to help the team. East LA
struggled getting the ball back over the net
in the latter stages of the game, while
Mendoza put it away with her 16th
kill of the night.
In
addition to the 16 kills by Mendoza and 12
by Brittany Hayes, Megan Hayes added 10
kills. Cortez distributed the ball well and
concluded the match with 48 assists, while
Reich chipped in with eight kills, five
service aces and 12 digs. The duo of
sophomore
Vanessa Mojica (Whittier HS)
and freshman
Chrystal Gonzalez (Santa Fe HS)
combined for 30 digs.
