The Cerritos College volleyball team
evened their South Coast Conference record
at 6-6 after defeating Los Angeles City
College, 30-28, 30-26, 30-17 on the road
Wednesday night. Although the team will miss
the post-season this year, the Falcons
(6-17) were able to record some wins on the
year and received very good performances
along the way. Cerritos will close out their
home schedule on Friday night with a 7:30
p.m. contest against Mt. San Antonio College
and finish off their season next Wednesday
at El Camino College.
In the win over the Cubs,
a trio of Falcons recorded 11 kills each to
lead the way. Sophomore
Kristin Mendoza (St. Paul HS),
who has come on strong in the latter part of
the season, was joined by freshmen
Brittany Hayes (Artesia HS)
and
Julie Reich (La Mirada HS) on
the offensive side. Reich, who had five of
her kills in the first game, also registered
a season-high 24 digs and was instrumental
in the outcome of the match.
The
balance of offense and defense was evident
on the night, as the Falcons prevented the
Cubs from pulling out wins in any of the
games. Joining Reich with strong defensive
games were sophomores
Vanessa Mojica (Whittier HS),
who had 15 digs and three service aces, and
Jacquelyn Chacon (Warren HS)
with 12 digs, while the duo of freshmen
Desiree Cortez (Elizabeth
Learning Center HS) and
Chrystal Gonzalez (Santa Fe HS)
each added 11. Freshman
Teresa Orejel (Santa Fe HS)
added four kills on the night, while Cortez
recorded 36 assists in the win.
