Although the Cerritos College
volleyball team suffered a 27-30, 21-30,
33-35 South Coast Conference loss to Mt. San
Antonio College on Friday night, the team
pushed the Mounties to the limit in two of
the games. The Falcons, (6-18 overall, 6-7
SCC) appeared to have the third game won,
but saw a 29-22 lead get away. It culminated
one of the more intense performances by the
squad all season long. Cerritos will now
close out their season on Wednesday when
they travel to El Camino College.
In the third game, the
Falcons worked their way to a 29-22 lead,
but surrendered eight straight points on the
serve of Kelsey Duling. After freshman
Teresa Orejel (Santa Fe HS)
recorded a kill to keep the match going, the
teams traded points until the Mounties won
the match, 35-33. Pamela Walker served up an
ace to give Mt. SAC a 34-33 lead before
Michelle Purper put the game and match away.
Cerritos opened the match with intensity
and had the match tied at 27-27 before
watching Mt. SAC score the final three
points to get the win. The game was tied 16
different times, as the Falcons received
five kills from sophomore
Kristin Mendoza (St. Paul HS)
and four from freshman
Julie Reich (La Mirada HS).
The team’s downfall was their serve
reception and their height disadvantage, as
the Mounties blocked many Falcon kill
attempts and threw off the team’s timing.
Mendoza finished with a team-high 14
kills, while Reich concluded with seven
kills, nine digs and two services aces. As
for freshman
Brittany Hayes (Artesia HS),
she added eight kills and eight digs, while
freshman setter
Desiree Cortez (Elizabeth
Learning Center HS) dished out 31
assists and had eight digs. Everybody
chipped in defensively, as many of the
points were scored after long rallies.
