The No. 17 state-ranked Long Beach
City College volleyball team cruised to a
three-game sweep of visiting cross town
rival Cerritos College in a South Coast
Conference match on Wednesday night. The
Falcons dropped the match by scores of
15-30, 30-32 and 15-30. The win improved
Long Beach to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the
SCC, while Cerritos dropped to 0-13 and 0-2
in conference play. The Falcons will look
for their first win of the season when they
host Los Angeles Trade-Tech College at 7:30
p.m. on Friday.
After a quick first-game
win for the Vikings, Cerritos came storming
out in the second to build a 14-9 lead. Long
Beach went on a 9-5 run to cut the Falcons
advantage to 19-18, but Cerritos came right
back to extend its lead to 23-19. With
Cerritos clinging to a 25-24 advantage, the
Vikings rallied behind the serving of Alo
Taumanupepe to score four straight points
and take a 28-25 lead that they wouldn't
give up. Losing game two seemed to drain the
Falcons as LBCC easily took the third to
complete the sweep.
Freshmen
Brittany Hayes (Artesia HS)
and
Samantha Montiel (Montebello HS)
shared the team lead with five kills apiece,
while a quartet of players had four kills on
the night. Sophomore
Vanessa Mojica (Whittier HS)
held the back line with 13 digs and also
served up two aces, while freshman setter
Desiree Cortez (Elizabeth
Learning Center HS) took over the setter
duties in favor of freshman
Julie Reich (La Mirada HS),
who missed the match, and posted 23 assists.
Sophomores
Kristin Mendoza (St. Paul HS),
Adriana Fletes (Downey HS)
and
Natalie Barajas (California HS),
along with freshman
Teresa Orejel (Santa Fe HS)
all four kills.
