On the strength of sophomore
Kristin Mendoza’s (St. Paul HS)
season-high 16 kills, the Cerritos College
volleyball team picked up their first win of
the season, as they defeated Los Angeles
Trade-Tech College, 30-22, 30-18, 30-22 in a
South Coast Conference match on Friday
night. The win now gives the Falcons a 1-13
record on the year and a 1-2 mark in the
SCC, while the Lady Techsters dropped to 0-6
overall and 0-3 in conference play. Cerritos
will look for their second straight win when
they travel East Los Angeles College on
Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. match.
Mendoza was a catalyst in
all three games with her prowess at the net,
while the Falcons also received offensive
support from sophomore
Natalie Barajas (California HS),
who had eight kills. Cerritos jumped out to
an early lead in the first game, thanks in
part to a slow start by LATT. The lead
swelled to 13-3, on the strength of three
kills by freshman
Teresa Orejel (Santa Fe HS)
and led, 21-7 before a run by La Trade-Tech
got them to within 28-20.
The
Falcons actually fell behind 14-13 in the
second game, but Mendoza was there to serve
10 straight points, which included three
service aces and a kill. That was enough to
propel Cerritos to a large lead, and they
went on to win the game. Freshman
Brittany Hayes (Artesia HS)
had three of her five kills on the night in
the second game, while
Adriana Fletes (Downey HS)
also had three kills in the game.
After a close start to the third game,
the Falcons slowly pulled away, scoring
points in bunches, with Barajas accounting
for five kills, along with seven more
recorded by Mendoza.
The
trio of Hayes, Fletes and Orejel each
contributed five kills in the win, while
sophomore
Vanessa Mojica (Whittier HS)
and freshman
Desiree Cortez (Elizabeth
Learning Center HS) contributed two
services aces. Mojica also led the team with
11 digs, while freshman setter
Julie Reich (La Mirada HS)
dished off 23 assists and added five digs.
