After losing their first 13 games to
start the season, the Cerritos College
volleyball team picked up their second win
in a row, as they defeated East Los Angeles
College in five sets, 30-21, 17-30, 29-31,
30-21, 15-8 in a South Coast Conference
match on Wednesday. The Falcons are now 2-13
on the season, as well as being 2-2 in
conference play. They look for their third
win in a row on Friday, when they play host
to Los Angeles City College at 7:30 p.m.
Leading the team to their
come-from-behind win were sophomore
Kristin Mendoza (St. Paul HS)
and freshman
Brittany Hayes (Artesia HS),
who were nearly flawless on the night.
Mendoza, who led the team with 20 kills, had
four kills in the fourth game and three more
in the decider, while not committing an
error in her last 17 attempts. In addition,
Mendoza registered a career-high seven
blocks and added three service aces. As for
Hayes, she checked in with 18 kills and just
four errors, while she also went errorless
in her final 17 attempts. Her best game was
the third game, as she had seven kills,
while followed that with three kills in each
of the fourth and fifth games.
Also
playing a superb match was freshman
Julie Reich (La Mirada HS),
who split time at setter, and finished with
24 assists to go along with her six service
aces and five kills, while freshman
Desiree Cortez (Elizabeth
Learning Center HS) contributed 20
assists. The duo of sophomore
Vanessa Mojica (Whittier HS)
and
Chrystal Gonzalez (Santa Fe HS)
shared in the team lead in digs with six
each, while freshman
Teresa Orejel (Santa Fe HS)
contributed six kills.
