The Cerritos College volleyball team
is primarily a freshman squad this season
and after a tightly contested first match of
the season, they found themselves against
one of the better teams in Southern
California on Monday night. The Falcons lost
their second straight match of the season,
as they were swept by Ventura College,
18-30, 16-30, 18-30. They will try for their
first win of the season on Wednesday when
they host College of the Canyons at 5:00
p.m. in their home opener.
Against the Pirates, the
Falcons fell behind early against a more
experienced and taller team. Although
Cerritos did well defending at the net with
nine blocks, they struggled on the back line
and recorded only six digs in the three
games. Additionally, the team only recorded
14 kills in 90 attempts and had 17 errors,
which really hurt them along the way.
The
duo of freshman
Brittany Hayes (Artesia HS)
and sophomore
Kristin Mendoza (St. Paul HS)
each had four kills in the match, while
Mendoza added three blocks. Also with three
blocks and three service aces was freshman
Teresa Orejel (Santa Fe HS),
while sophomore
Natalie Barajas (California HS)
and freshman
Julie Reich (La Mirada HS)
each finished with two kills.
