In their first match at home this
season, the Cerritos College volleyball team
didn’t really come to life until the third
game against College of the Canyons on
Wednesday. But by then, the deficit was too
great, as the Falcons dropped a 17-30,
13-30, 26-30 non-conference match to drop to
0-3 on the year. The team will now enter the
Santa Monica Tournament on Saturday.
It was a quick 7-2 lead
for the Falcons in the first game, but then
saw the Cougars scored nine unanswered
points, which seemed to throw off Cerritos
the rest of the game. They got to within
12-10 after a service error by Canyons, a
kill by freshman
Brittany Hayes (Artesia HS)
and an ace by sophomore
Jackie Chacon (Warren HS).
But that would be as close as the team would
get, with the Cougars leading 29-14 before
three straight points by Cerritos got them
to their final tally.
Cerritos fell behind early in the second
game and could not get any momentum started.
Canyons gave the Falcons trouble with their
serve, while the team had difficulty passing
the ball. The team only had four kills in
the second game, with sophomore
Adriana Fletes (Downey HS)
recording two of them.
Although the Falcons didn’t lead at all
in the third game, they did keep it close
after falling behind, 10-4 to start the
game. Hayes recorded five of her team-high
six kills in the third game, while freshman
Samantha Montiel (Montebello HS)
served up three aces. It was a 23-23 tie
after an error by the Cougars, but Canyons
rebounded to score seven of the final 10
points.
On
the night, freshman setter
Desiree Cortez (Elizabeth
Learning Center HS) dished off 18
assists, while freshman
Chrystal Gonzalez (Santa Fe HS)
played solid defense, leading the team with
10 digs. Fletes chipped in with four kills,
while Montiel also had nine digs. The
Falcons played without the services of
versatile freshman
Julie Reich (La Mirada HS).
