The Cerritos College volleyball team
entered the Santa Monica Tournament on
Saturday with hopes of picking up their
first win of the season after several close
calls. But after losses to Santa Barbara
City College (19-30, 28-30, 20-30) and Santa
Monica College (20-30, 23-30, 25-30), the
Falcons dropped to 0-5 on the season. They
will now travel to Orange Coast College for
a 5:00 p.m. non-conference match on
Wednesday.
Several players have
started to improve their statistical
numbers, with sophomore
Kristin Mendoza (St. Paul HS)
leading the way. In the loss to Santa
Barbara City, she recoded a team-high eight
kills with no errors, while also adding the
team’s only two blocks and led the way with
two service aces. Freshman
Brittany Hayes (Artesia HS)
also had eight kills in the match, while
sophomore
Natalie Barajas (California HS)
finished with six kills. The offense was
directed by freshman
Desiree Cortez (Elizabeth
Learning Center HS), who had 26 assists,
while freshmen
Chrystal Gonzalez (Santa Fe HS),
Julie Reich (La Mirada HS)
and
Samantha Montiel (Montebello HS)
held the back line with eight digs each.
It was Mendoza who once
again led the offensive attack against Santa
Monica, as she pitched in with 10 kills, two
service aces and two blocks, while sophomore
Adriana Fletes (Downey HS)
had a strong game with seven kills. The
defense really worked hard to keep the team
in the match, with eight different players
registering at least one dig, while freshman
Amber Olivas (Hacienda Heights
Wilson HS) led the team with 14 digs.
Montiel finished with 12 digs, while Reich
had 15 assists and eight digs. Freshman
Teresa Orejel (Santa Fe HS)
turned in a season-high four blocks.
