The Cerritos College volleyball team
went to the San Diego Mesa Tournament with
the intent on getting their first win of the
season. In their three matches, they were
swept twice, but had a great chance for a
victory, but were defeated in five games.
After opening with a 20-30, 10-30, 16-30
loss to Los Angeles Pierce College, they
dropped a 13-30, 23-30, 21-30 match to rival
and South Coast Conference team Long Beach
City College. On the second day, they jumped
out to a 30-27, 30-22 lead over Victor
Valley College before losing the next three
games, 27-30, 28-30, 13-15. On Wednesday,
the Falcons (0-9) will finish up their
non-conference schedule when they host
Fullerton College at 7:00 p.m.
In the loss to Victory
Valley, change in the match was the team’s
struggles with serve reception and passing.
Cerritos had 12 service errors, with most of
them coming in the latter part of the match.
The miscues overshadowed a great performance
by freshman
Teresa Orejel (Santa Fe HS),
who had 10 kills with no errors, while
freshman
Brittany Hayes (Artesia HS)
led the team with 14 kills. The Falcons did
have success with their serve, recording 14
service aces, while freshman
Megan Hayes (Artesia HS) led
the team with five aces, along with nine
kills, seven assists and four digs. Freshman
Amber Olivas (Hacienda Heights
Wilson HS) added four aces, while
freshman
Desiree Cortez (Elizabeth
Learning Center HS) dished out 32
assists.
There were plenty of struggles in the
two opening losses, as the Falcons had
trouble getting the ball over the net and
didn’t pass the ball very well. Brittany
Hayes combined for 10 kills in the two
losses, as did freshman
Samantha Montiel (Montebello HS),
who also had 11 digs. Sophomore
Adriana Fletes (Downey HS)
posted six kills in the loss to Long Beach
City, while sophomore
Kristin Mendoza (St. Paul HS)
chipped in with four kills in the setback to
LA Pierce. Freshman
Julie Reich (La Mirada HS)
combined for 30 assists and 13 digs on the
first day and added eight more digs against
Victor Valley.
