Playing with a newfound enthusiasm,
the Cerritos College volleyball team came
out against #4-ranked Fullerton College and
fought hard in their non-conference match on
Wednesday night. But the results were the
same, as the Falcons (0-10) dropped a 20-30,
23-30, 17-30 decision to the Hornets (6-1).
Cerritos will now open South Coast
Conference play on Friday when they host
winless Pasadena City College at 7:30 p.m.
In the first game, the
Falcons stayed even with Fullerton through
the first 17 points, thanks in part to the
play of sophomore
Kristin Mendoza (St. Paul HS),
who recorded a trio of kills to keep the
team even. But, it was the size and powerful
kills of Crisi Nihipali and Leah Haproff
that allowed the Hornets to outscore
Cerritos, 13-3 the remainder of the game.
The Falcons did receive much-improved
defense from the back line, although their
serve reception and passing limited them in
their ability to maintain any long rallies.
Cerritos fell behind early in the second
game, but did make a run in the latter
stages, with the help of sophomore
Vanessa Mojica (Whittier HS),
who had three straight services aces to get
the team to within 23-20 after being down by
as much as 23-15. But once again, the
Hornets had too much firepower, as Haproff
and Nicole Coffer received great support
from setter Katie Adams. By the third game,
a lot of the momentum the Falcons were
working on seemed to dissipate, as Fullerton
was in control from the outset.
Mendoza led the Falcons with eight
kills, while Mojica came up with some great
digs to finish with 13, with freshman
Chrystal Gonzalez (Santa Fe HS)
adding 10. A trio of players finished with
three kills each, while freshman
Julie Reich (La Mirada HS)
directed the offense with 18 assists.
