Facing the
#2-ranked team in the state on Wednesday night, the
Cerritos College volleyball team put up a hard
fight, but still dropped a three-set match to El
Camino College, 10-25, 17-25, 18-25 to drop to 5-8
on the year and 2-2 in South Coast Conference play.
The Falcons will now travel to Los Angeles City on
Friday for a 7:30 p.m. conference match.
Cerritos and the
Warriors had numerous long rallies over the course
of the match, with most of the points going to El
Camino. In the second game, the Falcons held a 14-13
lead after a kill by freshman
Mary
Faleafine (Artesia HS), but
saw the Warriors win 12 of the next 15 points to
record a 25-17 win. El Camino turned to Amrita
Tuladhar and Eria Kirby for a lot of their points,
although it was their defensive prowess that enabled
their offense to be effective. It was more of the
same in the third set, as freshmen
Britney
Otero (Long Beach Wilson HS)
and
Sarah
Naranjo (Santa Fe HS) shared
on a block to tie the match at 12-12. But just like
in the second set, El Camino regained control and
went up 20-15 before closing out the match with a
25-18 victory.
Faleafine led the
team with seven kills and five digs, while freshman
Cynthia Andrade (South Gate HS)
finished with five kills. Freshman
Samantha
Mora (Los Altos HS) also had
five digs and recorded two service aces, with
sophomore setter
Desiree
Cortez (Elizabeth Learning Center
HS) distributing 14 assists.
