Riding the
momentum of their three-game comeback against Los
Angeles City College last Friday night, the Cerritos
College volleyball team opened up a 2-0 lead over
Pasadena City College on Wednesday night. However,
the Lancers fought back and escaped by winning the
next three games. The 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 18-25,
15-17 loss drops the Falcons to 6-9 on the year and
3-3 in SCC play, while the 25th-ranked Lancers are
now 9-5 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
Cerritos will now host cross-town rival Long Beach
City College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
After the Falcons
took their early lead, Pasadena City was finally
able to utilize their overall size to control the
net, although Cerritos was still able to hit through
their blocks when they needed a big point. The
turning point of the match may have come in the
third game with the score tied 23-23. Looking to
move one point away from match point, freshman
Samantha Mora (Los Altos HS)
served into the net and Pasadena City received a
block on the next play from Ashley Marshman to win
the game.
The Lancers
followed that up with an early lead in the fourth
game and fought off the Falcons, who tied the game
at 11-11 after a
Mary
Faleafine (Artesia HS) kill.
But once again, it was Marshman who had a hand in
the Lancers next six points, as they opened a 19-13
lead and rode that to a 25-18 win.
It appeared as
though Pasadena City would capture the fifth game
without much of a fight from that Falcons, but they
were faced with a team that was looking to post
their biggest win of the year. After falling behind
4-0, Cerritos scored the next six points with Mora
(six digs) serving. Turning primarily to freshman
Sarah Naranjo (Santa Fe HS) in
the fifth game, the Falcons got right back into the
game and took a 6-4 lead. The momentum went back to
the Lancers until Naranjo (season-high 20 kills, 11
digs) posted three straight kills. But just as she
did in the fourth game, Marshman (14 kills, six
service aces, five blocks) posted a kill and a
service ace for a 12-9 Lancer lead. It was 13-10 PCC
until freshman
Kristen
Trillo (Santa Fe HS) recorded
two straight service aces. Freshman
Cynthia
Andrade (South Gate HS), who
had a season-high 18 kills, drilled home a kill to
tie the game at 14-14 until a kill by Jessica
Damasco gave Pasadena City a 15-14 lead.
Freshman
Yawen Zhan
(China) tied the game at 15-15 with a kill
before Galia Sotomayor scored on a dink. The game
ended when Andrade's attempt went into the net.
On the night,
sophomore setter
Desiree
Cortez (Elizabeth Learning Center
HS) recorded 23 assists and six digs, while
freshman
Angelica
Sievers (St. Joseph HS) added
10 digs from the back row. Freshman
Britney
Otero (Long Beach Wilson HS)
hit her way to seven kills and also contributed
three blocks.
