In another
hard-fought attempt to post an upset, the Cerritos
College volleyball team came up short, losing,
21-25, 20-25, 25-12, 23-25 to cross-town rival Long
Beach City College on Friday night in a South Coast
Conference match. The Falcons (6-10 overall, 3-4
SCC) appeared to be headed for a fifth and deciding
game, but the Vikings (11-5, 4-3) pulled out the
fourth game after trailing, 23-21. Cerritos will now
host Mt. San Antonio at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
After losing two
close games to fall behind 0-2, Cerritos stormed out
in the third game and led 14-1 to start, thanks in
part to a pair of service aces by freshman
Samantha
Mora (Los Altos HS) and a
block and kill by freshman
Yawen Zhan
(China). The Falcons seemed to lose some of
that momentum in the fourth game, as they fell
behind, 11-5 to start, as Viking sophomore Maricris
Lapaix remained hot from the first two games. But
Cerritos slowly worked their way back into the game
and eventually tied the match at 20-20 on a kill by
freshman
Sarah Naranjo
(Santa Fe HS).
A block by Jessica
Booth and Lacy Baker gave the Vikings a 21-20 lead,
but the Falcons were not done, as Naranjo drove home
three straight kills for a 23-21 advantage. That
would be the end of the rally, as LBCC received
another kill from Lapaix (19 kills), while Vanessa
Ray added a kill and block. The match point was a
play in which the Falcons would be unable to get the
serve back over the net.
Naranjo matched
Lapaix kill for kill and wound up with 24, while
freshman
Cynthia
Andrade (South Gate HS) added
nine kills, with freshman
Mary
Faleafine (Artesia HS)
contributing eight kills and six digs in just three
games. Sophomore setter
Desiree
Cortez (Elizabeth Learning Center
HS) directed the offense with 42 assists, while
Zhan paced the team with four blocks and added three
kills. Freshman
Britney
Otero (Long Beach Wilson HS)
added six kills, with freshman
Angelica
Sievers (St. Joseph HS)
posting nine digs. Ray concluded the night with six
kills and three blocks for the Vikings, while Audris
Leiataua added three kills.
