The Cerritos College volleyball
team withstood every rally put
together by visiting Citrus
College on Friday evening and
posted their first win of the
year, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23,
25-18. The Falcons (1-1) don't
have much time to revel in the
win, as they take to the road to
compete in the Cuyamaca
Tournament on Saturday.
In the three games they won,
Cerritos opened up a lead midway
through, only to see the Owls
make an attempt to come away
with the win. The key game in
the match was the third, which
came on the heels of the second
game that Citrus came away with
after the teams were tied 13
times, including ever point from
the 10th point to the 20th. In
the third game, the Falcons fell
behind 5-2, but scored seven of
the next eight points to take a
9-6 lead. It was a balanced
attack, with a pair of Citrus
errors helping along the way.
Both freshman
Mary Faleafine (Artesia
HS) and sophomore
Desiree Cortez (Foshay
Learning Center HS) each
posted kills along the way in
the third, while freshman
Cynthia Andrade (South
Gate HS) recorded a block
to help the Falcons start to
pull away. After the game was
tied at 10-10, Cerritos slowly
opened a 15-11 lead, but had to
hold off Citrus one more time.
Hanging on to a 20-17 lead,
Faleafine posted a big kill,
followed by another to put
Cerritos on top 22-19. After
Citrus tied the game at 22-22,
thanks to a pair of Lindsey
Stragier kills, it was freshman
Britney Otero (Long
Beach Wilson HS) who halted
the rally with a kill. A service
ace by freshman
Kristen Trillo (Santa
Fe HS) got the team one
point away, while a long rally,
that included several fine
defensive plays set up the
winning kill by Otero.
Cerritos carried that momentum
into the fourth game and pulled
away for a 25-18 win, with Otero
leading the team with three
kills in the game.
On the night, freshman
Sarah Naranjo (Santa
Fe HS) led the team with 10
kills, while Andrade and
freshman
Yawen Zahn (China)
each contributed seven kills.
Cortez dished out 27 assists,
while Trillo (10 digs) and
freshman
Angelica Seivers (St.
Joseph HS), who added seven
digs and two service aces, led
the team defensively. Straiger
led the Owls with 12 kills.
