After a slow start
to the season, the Cerritos College volleyball team
seems to be hitting their stride. After defeating
Citrus College at home on Friday evening, the
Falcons took to the road to compete in the
Cuyamaca Tournament. Although they had a 2-5
record in pool play, they entered the consolation
round and defeated two opponents to win the
consolation championship. The team will now travel
to College of the Canyons for a 5:00 p.m. match on
Wednesday.
In pool play, the
Falcons faced Riverside Community College (17-25,
19-25), Southwestern College (20-25, 25-23, 15-9)
and South Mountain (AZ) College (14-25, 22-25). In
the playoffs, Cerritos posted wins over San Diego
Mesa (25-16) and Southwestern (25-21) for the
consolation title.
In pool play,
freshman
Sara
Naranjo (Santa Fe HS)
led the team with 16 kills, while freshmen
Britney
Otero (Long Beach Wilson HS)
and
Samantha Mora (Los Altos HS)
each added 10. Defensively, the Falcons were led by
Mora's 17 digs, while
Naranjo and freshman
Mary
Faleafine (Artesia HS)
each chipped in 13 with apiece. Sophomore setter
Desiree Cortez (Foshay Learning
Center HS) posted 48 assists in pool play.
The playoffs saw
Faleafine and
Naranjo led the team with three kills each in
the win over San Diego Mesa, while the two combined
for eight of the team's nine kills in the
consolation championship match. The Falcons used
four service aces against SD Mesa and had 24 for the
tournament. Freshman
Kristen
Trillo (Santa Fe HS),
who took over the setting duties in the consolation
finals, had six service aces in the first match
against Southwestern and concluded the tournament
with nine aces.
