The Cerritos
College volleyball team turned another corner on the
young season with an even younger group. Fighting
off several rallies from Ventura College in the
fourth game, the Falcons held on to post a win to
even their record at 2-2. Facing a team that went
18-2 just two seasons ago, Cerritos registered a
25-21, 24-26, 25-21, 25-21 win over the Pirates
(2-6). The team will now travel south to compete in
the San Diego Mesa Tournament, which starts on
Friday and run through Sunday.
After splitting
the first two games, Cerritos broke a 10-10 tie by
recording three points without even registering a
kill. Then, leading 22-16, the Falcons saw the
Pirates score four straight points before Ventura's
Randy Hicks hit the ball into the net to end the
rally. Another ball hit out by Alexandra Joyce gave
the Falcons a 24-20 lead before a service error by
Joyce finished the game off with Cerritos winning,
25-21. In that game, the Falcons recorded just five
kills, with freshman
Sarah
Naranjo (Santa Fe HS) posting
four on her own.
It was a series of
rallies that was the theme in the fourth and
deciding game. Down, 10-8, Cerritos scored eight
straight points, with freshman
Cynthia
Andrade (South Gate HS)
posting two kills, while freshman
Angie
Sievers (St. Joseph HS) added
an ace for a 16-10 lead. But then Ventura scored
four straight before a thrilling rally that saw both
teams making great digs before Naranjo finished off
the point with a kill. Even with a 21-17 lead, it
wasn't safe, as the Pirates received three kills
from Joyce before tying the game at 21-21. But a
kill by freshman
Samantha
Mora (Los Altos HS), coupled
with an error by Ventura and a service ace by
freshman
Mary
Faleafine (Artesia HS) got the
team to match point. Going to Joyce one last time,
the Pirates saw the match come to an end when she
hit the ball into the net.
Mora led the team
with 10 kills, while Naranjo finished with nine
kills and two service aces. Mora contributed three
service aces and five digs, while sophomore setter
Desiree Cortez (Elizabeth Learning
Center HS) dished out 20 assists.
