Coming off an
inspiring four-set win over Ventura College on
Wednesday, the Cerritos College volleyball team went
to the San Diego Mesa Tournament and found
themselves in trouble. The Falcons (3-5) lost three
of the four matches in which they competed and will
now look to rebound on Wednesday when they travel to
Fullerton College for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference
match. Even though they lost three matches, two of
the games were by two points and two were by three
points.
The team opened
with a four-set loss to Glendale (AZ) College,
25-21, 19-25, 14-25, 25-27, but then rebounded later
that day with an 18-25, 25-15, 19-25, 25-22, 16-14
come-from-behind win over Victor Valley College. On
the next day, they fought back against cross-town
rival Long Beach City College, but wound up losing,
19-25, 33-31, 22-25, 30-28, 7-15 before closing the
tournament with a 22-25, 16-25, 25-19, 23-25 setback
against Riverside College.
Over the course of
the tournament, there were several outstanding
performances. Against Glendale (AZ), freshman
Sarah Naranjo (Santa Fe HS)
led the team with nine kills, four service aces and
seven digs, while freshman
Britney
Otero (Long Beach Wilson HS)
chipped in with six kills. Sophomore setter
Desiree
Cortez (Elizabeth Learning Center
HS) dished out 30 assists, while freshman
Yawen Zhan (China) controlled
the net with four blocks.
A trio of Falcons
posted double-digit kills in the five-set win over
Victor Valley, with Naranjo finishing with 15 kills
and three service aces. Freshman
Samantha
Mora (Los Altos HS) had her
best match of the season with 14 kills and six digs,
while freshman
Mary
Faleafine (Artesia HS) posted
11 kills and four digs. Cortez continued to run the
offense and registered 41 assists, while Zhan (seven
kills) and Otero (six kills) also had strong
matches.
The team continued
to play well, but ran out of gas in the fifth set
against Long Beach City. Naranjo stayed hot with 12
kills and just four errors, with Otero and freshman
Cynthia Andrade (South Gate HS)
each adding 10 kills and combined for just six
errors. Freshman
Angelica
Sievers (St. Joseph HS) was
strong on the back row and led the team with 12
digs, while Cortez passed out 34 assists. Andrade
(13 kills), Naranjo (11 kills) and Mora (11 kills,
four digs) all played well against Riverside, but
lost two close games. Cortez contributed two kills
to her 30 assists, while Zhan had four kills.
