The Cerritos
College volleyball team, still in the hunt for a
Southern California Regional Playoff bid, took
another step forward when they defeated host East
Los Angeles College, 25-13, 25-21, 25-10 in a South
Coast Conference match on Wednesday. The Falcons,
ranked #18 in the state, are 11-6 overall and 8-4 in
conference play. They will now host Los Angeles
Harbor College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
In the sweep over
the Huskies, the Falcons kept points alive with
their defensive prowess, while the team also was
effective at the net. On the night, the team hit a
combined .360, led by 16 kills from sophomore
Sarah Naranjo (Santa Fe HS).
In the back row, Naranjo added seven digs, with
sophomore
Angelica Sievers (St. Joseph's HS)
pacing the team with 10 digs.
Sophomore setter
Monique Gayton (La Serna HS)
dished out 29 assists and added five kills without
an error. Freshman Chanelle Puou
(California HS) contributed 11 kills and
just one error, with freshmen
Johanna Tope
(Bellflower HS) and
Christina Contreras (Santa Fe HS)
combining for five kills in nine attempts without an
error. Sophomore Krystel
Luna (Downey HS/Pasadena City
College) finished with nine digs, while
sophomore Yawen
Zhan (China) added four kills
and four blocks.
