The Cerritos
College volleyball team knew they were in for a
tough match against Pasadena City College on Monday.
The Lancers entered the match leading the South
Coast Conference and were riding an 18-match winning
streak. By contrast, the Falcons had a two-match
winning streak and were looking for a big win to
help them in their quest for a post-season bid. But
Pasadena City had too many weapons and posted a
25-23, 25-12, 25-22 win over Cerritos. The team is
now 12-7 overall and 9-5 in conference play with
just two matches remaining. Their most important
match is on Friday at 6:00 p.m. when they host Mt.
San Antonio College, as third place in the SCC is on
the line.
The Falcons turned
to sophomore
Sarah Naranjo (Santa Fe HS) in
the match and she responded with 10 kills. But she
also had 10 kill errors, as the team had a hard time
finding open space on the court against a strong
Lancer back row. The team did have some success at
the net, as they posted a season-high 13 blocks,
with sophomore Yawen
Zhan (China) leading the way
with five blocks, while sophomore setter
Monique Gayton (La Serna HS)
added three blocks with her 29 assists and two
kills.
Freshman
Christina Contreras (Santa Fe HS)
also had three blocks, while Zhan posted eight kills
and freshman Chanelle Puou
(California HS) added nine kills and two
blocks. In the back row, sophomore
Angelica Sievers (St. Joseph's HS)
finished with 15 digs, with Naranjo (eight) and Zhan
(six) also playing well.
