On the strength of
their 25-20, 25-17, 25-15 home win over Mt. San
Antonio College on Friday night, the Cerritos
College volleyball team has secured themselves at
least a tie for third place in the South Coast
Conference. The Falcons, ranked #18 in the state,
ended their regular season 13-7 overall and 10-5 in
conference action, while the Mounties (9-5) will
play Long Beach City College in their final match.
The seedings for the Southern California Regional
Playoffs will be held November 21, while the first
round of the playoffs are scheduled for November 24.
The post-season bid will be the first for Cerritos
since the 2006 season.
Playing with vigor
and enthusiasm, the Falcons took control of the
match from the outset and made very few errors all
night. In fact, the team has as many service errors
(6) as they did kill errors. After opening up a 6-0
lead in the first game, Cerritos saw the Mounties
get as close as 10-8 before slowly pulling away. In
the game, sophomore
Sarah Naranjo (Santa Fe HS)
posted seven kills.
Another fast start
in the second game gave the team the momentum they
would never relinquish, as an early 9-1 lead held up
and the Falcons picked up nine more kills from
Naranjo. More than the offensive prowess of Naranjo
was the team's overall passing ability and back row
defense that produced 45 digs on the night.
Sophomore
Angelica Sievers (St. Joseph's HS)
paced the team with 17 digs, while sophomore Krystel
Luna (Downey HS/Pasadena City
College) contributed 10.
Cerritos held off
an early rally from Mt. SAC in the third game and
turned a tight 6-4 game into a 19-8 lead they would
not relinquish. In fact, the three-game sweep
avenged an early four-game loss to the Mounties in
the first round of conference play.
Naranjo finished
the night with 21 kills, while freshman Chanelle Puou
(California HS) contributed 12 kills, while
sophomore Yawen
Zhan (China) added six kills.
Sophomore
Kristen Trillo (Santa Fe HS)
recorded five service aces and six digs, with
sophomore setter
Monique Gayton (La Serna HS)
dishing out 31 assists. Also playing very well was
freshman
Johanna Tope
(Bellflower HS), who finished with five
kills.
