When playing a
team ranked #8 in the state, it goes without saying
that mistakes have to be kept at a minimum in order
to come away with an upset win. On Friday night, the
Cerritos College volleyball team, ranked #22 in the
state, suffered a 22-25, 21-25, 14-25 home loss to
eighth-ranked Pasadena City College, who improved to
12-1 overall and 6-0 in South Coast Conference play.
The Falcons, who are now 7-4 overall and 4-2 in
conference action, will now travel to Mt. San
Antonio College on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m.
conference match.
Relying on the
offense of freshman Chanelle Puou
(California HS) in the first game, the
Falcons fought the Lancers to the end, but were not
able to come up with the win. Puou, who led the team
with 12 kills on the night, posted nine of them in
the first game, but struggled after that. Of her 13
hitting errors, 10 of them came in the second game,
but Cerritos was still able to get close to Pasadena
City before losing. Puou, who is one of the team's
top hitters, continued to play well in the back row
and had five digs, while she also recorded a block
and service ace.
The team's other
kill leader, sophomore
Sarah Naranjo (Santa Fe HS)
added 10 kills and five digs, but also struggled at
times, as she finished with six hitting errors. On
the night, Cerritos finished with 27 hitting errors
and a hitting percentage of .086.
Sophomore Yawen
Zhan (China) contributed seven
kills, with four coming in the third game, while she
led the team with three kills. Sophomore setter
Monique Gayton (La Serna HS)
dished out 24 assists, while sophomore
Angelica Sievers (St. Joseph HS)
made numerous diving digs and finished with a
team-high 14 for the night.
