The Cerritos
College volleyball team entered their South Coast
Conference match at Mt. San Antonio College on
Wednesday night tied for third place with the
Mounties. The winner would take over sole possession
of third place and have an inside track toward
Southern California Regional Playoff implications.
After the Falcons captured the first game against
the Mounties, 25-13, everything went downhill from
there, as Mt. San Antonio (8-4 overall, 5-2 SCC)
went on sweep the next three games, 25-21, 25-22,
25-14. The loss by the Falcons (7-5, 4-3) was their
second in a row, as they look to rebound when they
host Los Angeles City College at home on Friday.
Cerritos
controlled every aspect of the first game, which
included solid blocking at the net. Sophomore
Sarah Naranjo (Santa Fe HS)
accounted for five kills, while she went on to
finish with 20 kills, 19 digs, four blocks and three
service aces. The match displayed two teams that
kept long rallies going with strong back row
defense, as well as power at the net.
On the night, the
Falcons posted 68 digs with four posting
double-digit numbers. Along with Naranjo, sophomore
Angelica Sievers (St. Joseph HS)
added 13 digs, while sophomore Krystel
Luna (Downey HS/Pasadena City
College) contributed 11 digs. Sophomore setter
Monique Gayton (La Serna HS) distributed
31 assists, while she also added eight digs, with
freshman Chanelle Puou
(California HS) posting seven kills and 10
digs.
Sophomore Yawen
Zhan (China) was effective at
the net and added five blocks to go along with her
six kills, as freshman Janae Miley
(Calvary Chapel HS) finished with four
kills.
