After posting a
25-17 in the first set of their South Coast
Conference volleyball match on Friday night,
Cerritos College had all the confidence in the world
that they could upset two-time defending state
champion El Camino. But after the Warriors took the
second game, 25-13, the Falcons were able to push El
Camino in the next two games, but dropped 23-25 and
22-25 games and the match. The loss drops Cerritos
to 10-6 overall and 7-4 in conference play. They
will now travel to East Los Angeles College for a
6:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday.
In that first set
win, the Falcons received six kills from sophomore
Sarah Naranjo (Santa Fe HS),
while sophomore setter Monique
Gayton (La Serna HS)
made good on all three of her kills. They also
worked the back row well, with sophomores
Angelica Sievers (St. Joseph's HS)
and Krystel
Luna (Downey HS/Pasadena City
College) leading the way.
As hard as they
worked in the third and fourth sets, Cerritos just
wasn't able to extend the Warriors and play for the
upset. But there were several outstanding
performances that came out of the match.
Naranjo finished
with 21 kills and a .327 hitting percentage to go
along with her three blocks and eight digs, while
freshman Chanelle
Puou (California HS)
added 12 kills. Gayton finished with 34 assists and
four kills, with Sievers (12 digs) and Luna (10
digs) playing solid defense. Sophomore Yawen
Zhan (China) added four kills.
