Competing in their
first best-of-five series of the new season, the
Cerritos College volleyball team got a taste of what
it will take to be successful during the year. The
Falcons, playing in the San Diego Mesa Tournament,
dropped a series against Glendale (AZ) College
(25-23, 19-25, 24-26, 23-25) before responding with
a three-game sweep of the host Olympians, 25-19,
25-21, 25-21. On the second day, the team was
defeated by Bakersfield College, 23-25, 25-20,
20-25, 12-25 before closing out with a thrilling
20-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 15-9 win over Victor
Valley College to finished third in the consolation
round. Cerritos (2-2) will now host Fullerton
College on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in their first
non-conference match of the season.
In the five-set
win over Victor Valley, sophomore
Sarah Naranjo (Santa Fe HS)
and freshman Chanelle Puou
(California HS) were dominant at times, as
the two combined for 33 kills. In the deciding
game, Naranjo converted three of five kills, with Puou
driving home five more kills. In addition to her
contribution at the net, Naranjo also added five
service aces and 12 digs, while sophomore Yawen
Zhan (China) led the team with
six blocks to go along with her five kills.
Additionally, sophomore setter
Monique Gayton (La Serna HS)
posted five blocks to go with her 31 assists, 10
digs, six kills and three service aces.
Although they lost
to Bakersfield in four games, Naranjo finished with
17 kills, while Puou and Zhan each finished with
six. Sophomore
Kristen Trillo (Santa Fe HS)
had five services aces and was joined by Gayton (19
assists, five kills) and freshman
Sarah
Rodriguez (Montebello HS) with
five digs each. Sophomore Krystel
Luna (Downey HS/Pasadena City
College) led the back row with 11 digs, with
freshman Kanesha
Hudson (Long Beach Jordan HS)
stepping up with four blocks.
Puou led the sweep
of the Olympians with 14 kills in 30 attempts, with Naranjo
and Zhan each contributing five in the win. Gayton
did a solid job feeding them the ball and finished
with 16 assists, while she and Luna kept the points
going with their 10 digs apiece. The tournament
opened with Puou pounding home 14 kills and
recording seven digs, with Naranjo (eight kills, six
digs) and Zhan (seven kills, four blocks, three
service aces) turning in solid numbers. Luna led the
back row with 13 digs and Gayton dished out 27
assists.
