It was a match
that went back and forth from the very beginning.
But in the end, the Cerritos College volleyball team
came away with a thrilling 18-25, 25-21, 25-20,
19-25, 18-16 non-conference home win over Fullerton
College on Wednesday night. The win improved the
Falcons record to 3-2 on the season with the start
of South Coast Conference play right around the
corner. The team will travel to Long Beach City
College on Friday for their 6:00 p.m. conference
opener.
For the first four
games, the team primarily turned to freshman Chanelle Puou
(California HS) and sophomore
Sarah Naranjo (Santa Fe HS)
when they needed a kill. Puou, who finished with a
career-high 25 kills and Naranjo, who added 14
kills, had some help in the deciding fifth game.
Sophomore Yawen
Zhan (China), who led the team
with five blocks, provided a big kill in the final
game, as did sophomore setter
Monique Gayton (La Serna HS)
and sophomore back-row specialist Krystel
Luna (Downey HS/Pasadena City
College).
The Falcons kept
rallies alive with some superb defense, with Naranjo
turning in 12 digs and Luna adding 11 on the night.
When she wasn't dishing out 51 assists, Gayton also
added seven digs and two service aces to go with her
pair of kills. Zhan finished with six kills, while
the duo of sophomore
Cynthia
Andrade (South Gate HS) and
freshman
Christina Contreras (Santa Fe HS)
each contributed three kills.
