The Cerritos
College volleyball team took another step toward
putting themselves back in with some of the elite
teams in Southern California. On Friday night, the
Falcons opened South Coast Conference play with a
23-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-20 win at Long Beach City
College. The win improved the team's record to 4-2
overall and 1-0 in conference action. Cerritos will
now host Los Angeles Trade-Tech College in a 6:00
p.m. conference match on Monday.
In the first game,
the Falcons held a 22-19 lead, but saw the Vikings
come back to pull out the first game. The roles were
switched in the second game, as Cerritos fought back
for a crucial 26-24 win that gave them the momentum
to post two more wins and take the match. The
Vikings held a 23-19 lead in the second game, but
the Falcons scored seven of the next eight points
for the win.
Freshman Chanelle Puou
(California HS) led the team with 14 kills,
while sophomore
Sarah Naranjo (Santa Fe HS)
was a threat at the net and in the back row. She
added 11 kills, along with nine digs, three service
aces and two blocks, while the trio of Yawen
Zhan (China HS),
Cynthia
Andrade (South Gate HS) and
Christina Contreras (Santa Fe HS)
all had three blocks. Zhan also posted nine kills,
with Andrade adding seven kills and only one error.
Sophomore
Angelica Sievers (St. Joseph HS)
posted 15 digs from the back row, with sophomore
setter
Monique Gayton (La Serna HS)
setting 38 assists to go along with three kills and
two service aces.
