02.04.12 - Cerritos pulls away from LB City
Andrina Rendon (12) scored a game-high 20 points to lead Cerritos past Long Beach City.Knowing it would take wins over Long Beach City College and East Los Angeles College to help secure second place in the South Coast Conference, and possible a top four seed in the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs, the Cerritos College women's basketball team took one step closer with their 70-53 win over LB City at Gahr High School on Saturday. The Falcons maintained at least a one game lead over East LA with the win, as they improved to 10-3 in the SCC and 20-6 on the season. Cerritos will travel to face the Huskies on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in another important game, with just two more games to follow.

In facing the Vikings (16-6, 8-5), Cerritos broke open a close 40-39 lead with 16:00 left in the second half, as it took Long Beach City 12:40 to score their next field goal, as they relied on only six free throws during that duration. During the time period, the Falcons countered with 18 points to take a commanding 58-45 lead and were ahead by as much as 19 points in the final minute. LBCC went 0-for-10 from the field with nine turnovers during that duration, which is what Cerritos needed to pull away with the win...[more]

02.01.12 - Turnovers cost Falcons crucial game
In an uncharacteristic performance, the Cerritos College women's basketball team turned the ball over 31 times and at the end of the game, was forced to foul Pasadena City College in their South Coast Conference game on Wednesday night. The end result was a 78-66 loss that puts the team's second place standing in the conference in jeopardy. The Falcons (19-6 overall), who entered the night with a one-game lead over third place Long Beach City College, maintained their spot after first place Mt. San Antonio defeated the Vikings on Wednesday. LBCC and East Los Angeles are now just a game behind Cerritos, while the Falcons have to play both teams before the end of the regular season. They will host Long Beach City at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday at Gahr High School and then travel to East Los Angeles next Wednesday, with two more games to be played after that...[more]

01.30.12 - College to sponsor Coaches vs. Cancer
Cerritos College Athletics and the California Community College Men's and Women's Basketball Coaches Association have teamed up to support Coaches vs. Cancer with a night of fundraising and awareness. On Saturday, February 4 at Gahr High School, the Falcon men's and women's basketball teams will host Long Beach City College in South Coast Conference games as part of this worthy cause...[more]

01.28.12 - Falcons pull away from LA Trade-Tech
With 9:48 left in the first half, Los Angeles Trade-Tech College was holding on to a 16-13 lead against Cerritos College in a South Coast Conference game at Gahr High School on Saturday night. But by the time the first half ended, the Falcons were holding a sizable 42-24 advantage and eventually turned that into a 91-47 win. The victory improved their season record to 19-5, while they are now 9-2 in conference play with five games remaining. 01.25.12 - Cerritos loses to Mt. SAC for third time
Through their first 23 games, the Cerritos College women's basketball team is a stellar 18-5 on the year and 8-2 in the South Coast Conference. But after their 59-48 conference loss at Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday night, the Falcons have now seen three of those setback come at the hands of the Mounties, who improved to 21-2 and 10-0. Cerritos now trails Mt. 01.21.12 - 50-point win highlighted by 17 three-pointers
Diamond Roberts (20) led the Falcons with 17 points off the bench in the team's 94-44 win over ECC Compton Center.For the Cerritos College women's basketball team, they have relied on their three-point shooting to propel them to one of the top rankings in the state. Their outside shooting was so prolific in their 94-44 South Coast Conference win over ECC Compton Center at Gahr High School on Saturday night, that it resulted in a school-record 17 three-pointers. The Falcons (18-4, 8-1) drained 10 of them in the first half and shot a remarkable 50% from both beyond the arc and overall for their fifth win in  row and ninth in their last 10 games. The only team to beat them in conference play, Mt. San Antonio, is their opponent on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. in Walnut.

Sophomore Andrina Rendon (St. Paul HS) was 4-for-5 from three point range in the first half and finished the game with 14 points and eight rebounds. 01.18.12 - Falcons post 21-point win over El Camino
After the first round of the South Coast Conference schedule, the Cerritos College women's basketball team has posted a 7-1 record, which includes four wins by 20 or more points. The most recent was a 69-48 win at El Camino College on Wednesday night to improve the Falcons record to 17-4 overall. 01.14.12 - Cerritos dominates short-handed Cougars
Dershawna Staves (21) scored eight points and led the team with 10 rebounds in the Falcons 63-33 win over LA Southwest.Facing a team with just six players, the Cerritos College women's basketball team was able to rotate players in and out of the game to keep their players fresh. After opening up a 16-0 lead to start the game, the Falcons saw all 11 of their players get on the scoreboard, en route to a 63-33 South Coast Conference win over Los Angeles Southwest College on Saturday night at Gahr High School. The win improved the #5-ranked team in the state to 16-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play. They will look for their eighth win in nine game on Wednesday when they travel to El Camino College for a 5:00 p.m. conference game.

Freshman guard Marissa Rendon (St. Paul HS) opened the game with a pair of three-pointers, while Cerritos scored four of their first five baskets from beyond the arch against the Cougars (2-13, 0-6), who had no defense for the outside shooting and bench depth. LA Southwest did score the game's next nine points after the Falcons jumped out to their 16-0 lead, and it was a 29-17 lead at intermission. It took the Cougars 8:47 to finally get on the scoreboard in the first half, while 7:27 elapsed in the second half before they netted their first basket. 01.06.12 - Miracle shot at buzzer leads Falcons to win
Teammates mob Diamond Roberts (20), who banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the Falcons into OT against East LA before winning, 73-71.Freshman Diamond Roberts (Mayfair HS) stole an inbound pass at half court, dribbled twice and banked in a three-point basket at the buzzer to send the Cerritos College women's basketball team into overtime against East Los Angeles College in a South Coast Conference game on Friday night at Gahr High School. The buzzer-beater knotted the game at 67-67 against the Huskies (14-3, 4-1), who entered the game ranked #5 in Southern California and #6 in the state. Then, in overtime, sophomore Dershawna Staves (Bellflower HS) scored on a back-door layup with 1.5 seconds left to give the Falcons (15-4, 5-1) a 73-71 victory. Cerritos came into the contest ranked #8 in Southern California and #12 in the state. They will now host Los Angeles Southwest College at 5:00 p.m. next Saturday at Gahr HS.

At one point in the game, it didn't look like the Falcons were going to be able to come back from a 10-point deficit after going 9:04 without making a basket. During that duration, East LA outscored Cerritos, 22-9 with the only points coming from the free throw line. The Huskies saw Keyanna Johnson drain a trio of three-pointers during that span, en route to her game-high 23 points. But slowly, the Falcons started to work their way back into the game, thanks in part to a pair of technical fouls on East LA that seemed to shake their confidence...[more]

01.04.12 - Poor free throw shooting almost costs game
Talor Hixon (13) posted a double-double in the Falcons win over LBCC.As a team, the Cerritos College women's basketball squad had shot 65% from the free throw line over their first 17 games, which helped them get off to a 13-4 start. But, on Wednesday night at Long Beach City College, their free throw shooting almost cost the Falcons the game. In a tight battle with the Vikings, Cerritos was a meager 16-for-35 from the charity stripe, but still had enough depth and rebounding ability to post a 52-44 South Coast Conference win to improve to 14-4 on the year and 4-1 in conference play. The Falcons will now host another improved team, East Los Angeles College at 6:00 p.m. at Gahr High School on Friday. The win was also the ninth in a row over the Vikings and 31st in their last 34 meetings.

Neither team shot the ball well from the field, with the Falcons (27%) and the Vikings (28%) both trying to maintain a hectic pace to the game. The saving grace for Cerritos was that they out-rebounded Long Beach City, 64-40, which included a 28-10 advantage on the offensive end. After a Tiffany Taylor layup with 3:06 left in the second half, Cerritos was clinging to a 42-41 advantage. But sophomore Regina English (Bellflower HS) netted three free throws, followed by a basket from freshman Marissa Rendon (St. Paul HS) to put the team up, 47-41 with 1:19 remaining. Rendon (six points, four assists, four steals) then added a pair of free throws before a three-pointer by LBCC's (11-3, 2-3) Joanna Jaramillo made it a 49-45 lead with :29 seconds left...[more]

12.29.11 - Loss prevents team from tourney title
In their first meeting of the season against Mt. San Antonio College, the Cerritos College women's basketball team was soundly defeated by 22 points. Three weeks later, in the championship game of the Fullerton Tournament, the Falcons found themselves up against the same Mountie team on Thursday. with a chance at the win, Cerritos got a close as one point late in the game, but a pair of free throws by Danielle Peacon clinched a 61-58 win by Mt. SAC to hand the team their fourth loss in 17 games. The Falcons will now resume South Coast Conference play on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. when they travel to Long Beach City College...[more]

12.28.11 - Cerritos pulls away from Fullerton
Regina English pulls down one of her team-high 13 rebounds, along with her 15 points, to help the Falcons defeat Fullerton College.Facing the host Fullerton College team in their own tournament, the Cerritos College women's basketball team broke a 39-39 second half tie with an 8-0 run and held on for a 72-58 victory on Wednesday. The win propels the Falcons (13-3) into the championship game against Mt. San Antonio College at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Mounties snapped a seven-game Cerritos win streak earlier in the month, while the Falcons have gone on to win their next four games.

Leading the way in the win were sophomore forwards Andrina Rendon (St. Paul HS) and Regina English (Bellflower HS), who each scored 15 points, while English also hauled down a team-high 13 rebounds. Rendon netted a trio of three-pointers on the day, as did freshman forward Diamond Roberts (Pioneer HS), who finished with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench....[more]

 

12.27.11 - Falcons open tourney with big win
It took the Cerritos College women's basketball team a few minutes to start to pull away from Palomar College in the opening round of the Fullerton Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons went on an 11-2 run to open up a 25-13 first half lead and then took a 36-17 advantage into the half, on their way to a 66-37 victory. Cerritos (12-3) will now face the host Hornets at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the semi-finals...[more]

12.21.11 - Cerritos handles Pasadena City, 75-58
Andrina Rendon drains one of her three three-pointers, en route to a team-high 20 points.If the Cerritos College women's basketball team had any concern about getting off to a quick start against the #20th-ranked team in the state, the first two minutes of the game answered that question. The Falcons, who entered the game ranked #12 in the state, jumped out to an 11-0 lead against Pasadena City College in a South Coast Conference game at Gahr High School on Wednesday night and were not threatened the entire game. Cerritos won their ninth game in the last 10 contests with a 75-58 decision to improve to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the SCC, while the Lancers fell to 6-6 and 1-2. The Falcons will now enter the Fullerton Tournament, which starts next Tuesday.

Sophomore forward Andrina Rendon (St. Paul HS) came out with a hot hand and drained a pair of three-pointers, as Cerritos saw their lead swell to 26-5 at one point, with Rendon accounting for 11 of those points. Also providing outside shooting were the trio of freshmen Diamond Roberts (Mayfair HS) and Marissa Rendon (St. Paul HS), along with sophomore Armelia Patterson (Long Beach Millikan HS). Pasadena City tried to get back into the game with the services of Destinee Sellers, who finished with 12 first half points. But it was the fast-break by the Falcons that led them to 12 assists in their 18 first half baskets. Marissa Rendon led the team with six helpers in the first half...[more]

12.16.11 - Offensive outburst leads to big win
After going minutes without scoring against Mt. San Antonio College a week earlier, the Cerritos College women's basketball team had no trouble finding the bottom of the basket in their South Coast Conference game at Los Angeles Trade-Tech College on Friday. The Falcons (10-3, 2-1) opened up an early lead and were never threatened, as they recorded a 95-60 victory. The 95 points were the most scored by a Cerritos team since they recorded a 96-67 win over East Los Angeles College in 2002. The team will now host Pasadena City College next Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at Gahr High in another SCC contest...[more]

12.09.11 - Falcons unable to keep up with Mt. San Antonio
Cerritos College struggled in the second half against Mt. San Antonio and dropped a 72-50 decision.After falling behind 20-5 to start the game, the Cerritos College women's basketball team was able to outscore Mt. San Antonio College, 20-8 to end the first half in their South Coast Conference game at Cypress College on Friday night. But, in the second half, the Falcons (9-3) weren't able to repeat the comeback and dropped a 72-50 decision to drop to 1-1 in conference action, The game at Cypress College was considered a home game for Cerritos, while the majority of them are to be played at Gahr High School while the gym construction is being completed. The Falcons will now travel to Los Angeles Trade-Tech College for a 6:00 p.m. conference game next Friday.

Mt. SAC (10-2) relied heavily on center Danielle Peacon for their scoring, as they got her the ball inside. The end result was a 13-for-17 shooting night for a game-high 31 points to go along with her 13 rebounds. By contrast, the Falcons looked to score from the outside, but netted only 5-of-14 shots from three-point range. Freshman guard Marissa Rendon (St. Paul HS), in her second start of the season, led Cerritos with 15 points and three steals, while sophomore guard Armelia Patterson (Long Beach Millikan HS) added 11 points and drained a pair of three-pointers. 12.07.11 - Cerritos opens conference with big win
Dershawna Staves (21) led the Falcons with 15 points in their win over ECC Compton Center.The Cerritos College women's basketball team opened South Coast Conference play on Wednesday with a comfortable 76-31 win over ECC Compton Center at Compton College. The win was the seventh in a row for the Falcons (9-2), who will host Mt. San Antonio College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday at Cypress College in another conference game. The team will be playing their home games at Gahr High School for the second season in a row, but the game at Cypress will be a one-time event.

Leading the balanced attack for Cerritos was sophomore forward Dershawna Staves (Bellflower HS), who converted 7-of-11 field goals and finished with a game-high 15 points and also added nine rebounds and five blocked shots. Freshman guard Marissa Rendon (St. Paul HS), getting her first start of the season, netted 5-of-9 shots to account for 13 points, while adding a team-high four assists, while freshman forward Diamond Roberts (Mayfair HS) turned in a double-double off the bench with 12 points and 11 rebounds...[more]
 

12.05.11 - First 'home' game to be played at Cypress College
After opening the season with an 8-2 record, which includes winning the College of the Sequoias Tournament for the second year in a row, the Cerritos College women's basketball team will be playing their first home game of the season this Friday. With The Aviary still under construction, the Falcons will be hosting rival Mt. San Antonio College at Cypress College at 6:00 p.m. in a one-time event at the school. Representatives at Cypress College have cleared Parking Lot #5 for free parking the night of the game, with the doors opening at 5:00 p.m. Admission to the game is free...[more]

12.04.11 - Team wins Sequoias Tournament for second straight year
With 16 teams competing, the College of the Sequoias Tournament is considered one of the biggest in the state each season. For the second year in a row, the Cerritos College women's basketball team has swept through all four of their games to win the championship. The Falcons, who finished in second place two seasons ago, have won 11 of their last 12 games at the tournament. 11.19.11 - Falcons win consolation championship
After a close three-point loss to Grossmont College in the opening game of the Santa Barbara Tournament, the Cerritos College women's basketball team rebounded to win their next two games to capture the consolation championship. The Falcons (4-2) dropped a close 56-53 decision to the Griffins, but came back the next two days to defeat Riverside College (84-61) and San Diego Mesa College, 72-60. Last week, the Olympians handed Cerritos a 57-41 loss in the finals of the San Diego Mesa Tournament. 11.13.11 - Cerritos reaches finals of first tournament
In their first tournament of the season, the Cerritos College women's basketball team advanced to the championship game at the San Diego Mesa Tournament, before falling to the host Olympians, 57-41 in the finals. The Falcons (2-1) opened with an 80-53 win over Glendale College, before a 54-50 win over Rio Hondo College sent them to the finals. 05.19.11 - Pair of women's basketball players sign
Cerritos College women's basketball players April Perry (Cabrillo HS) and Rose Boatner (Centennial HS), who were both two-time 1st Team All-South Coast Conference selections, have both signed scholarships to continue their collegiate careers at Southern University of New Orleans, and NAIA school.
