Ever since the Cerritos College
women's basketball team opened the season by winning
their first three games, it looked as though the Falcons
would be in for a good season with a balance of freshmen
and sophomores. But, with injuries to two sophomore
starters, the Falcons have lost their last four games,
including a close 77-74 non-conference game at Cypress
College on Wednesday. The three-point loss comes on the
heels of a tough four-point loss to Antelope Valley
College at the Glendale College Tournament. Cerritos
will look to snap their losing streak next Thursday when
they open the College of the Sequoias Tournament against
San Jose City College.
In the loss to the Chargers, the game
went back and forth with six lead changes until Cypress
took the lead for good late in the first half and held a
44-35 lead at halftime. It was a 12-point cushion for
the Chargers in the second half until a 12-2 run by the
Falcons in a three-minute span got them back into the
game. But they just couldn't get the lead in the game,
as Cypress held on for their second three-point win over
the Falcons in as many years. Cerritos was led by
sophomore guard
LaTrina Payne
(Mayfair
HS),
who netted 23 points in the loss and converted 9-of-11
from the free throw line. Along with Payne, the Falcons
worked their way back into the game with the great play
of freshman forward
Tiffany Wilson
(Mayfair
HS),
who pulled down 11 rebounds and added 16 points.
Cerritos had a balanced game plan and
had four players score in double-figures, while they
pulled down 48 rebounds as a team. In addition to the
play of Payne and Wilson, freshman center
Genesis Lewis
(Paramount
HS)
led the team with 13 rebounds to go along with her 12
points, while freshman guard
Colleen Cooley
(Paramount
HS)
came off the bench to add 10 points. Sophomore guard
Chelsea Womack
(Lakewood
HS)
dished out a team-high six assists, with freshman
Cecily Garcia
(St.
Joseph HS)
coming off the bench to record five assists. |
