After helping the Cerritos College women’s basketball team to the South Coast Conference championship and appearance in the state championships, a trio of players have all signed a letter of intent to continue their education and playing career at Hawaii Pacific University. 04.02.08 - Karen Welliver named SoCal Coach of the Year
After leading her team to an undefeated South Coast Conference championship and berth into the state tournament, Cerritos College women's basketball coach Karen Welliver was named the Southern California Coach of the Year. Welliver, in her 26th season as the Falcon head coach, is one of only five California Community College women's basketball coaches to win over 500 games. She led Cerritos to a 26-9 record on the year, as the Falcons were seeded #8 in the regional playoffs and advanced to the Elite Eight before being eliminated by Foothill College in the quarterfinals...[more]

03.13.08 - Loss to Foothill ends season

The Cerritos College women's basketball team saw their season come to an end when they were defeated by Foothill College, 69-49 in the quarterfinals of the California Community College Athletic Association state championships, held at the University of the Pacific on Thursday afternoon. 03.10.08 - Falcons open state tournament against Foothill
For the first time since the 2001-02 season, the Cerritos College women's basketball team will be competing in the State Tournament, after their 55-30 win over Antelope Valley College on Saturday night. The Falcons (26-8), come in as the #4-seeded team from Southern California and will face #1 North seed, Foothill College on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. Foothill (31-2), champions of the Coast Conference North Division, defeated both Las Positas College (86-56) and Shasta College (73-64) to advance to the Elite Eight for the second year in a row...[more]


03.08.08 - Win sends Cerritos to State Tournament
As the old saying goes: Offense Wins Games. Defense Wins Championships. For the Cerritos College women’s basketball team, it definitely was their defense that enabled them to hold Antelope Valley College to just 2-of-31 shooting in the first half, as they Falcons opened up a 29-7 halftime lead. Cerritos, seeded #8 in the Southern California Regional Playoffs, went on to defeat the #17-seeded Marauders, 55-30 in the third round of the playoffs, catapulting them to the State Tournament, which will be held at the University of the Pacific starting next Thursday. The win by the Falcons (27-8) sends them to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2002 and fifth time in school history. Antelope Valley, who knocked off #1-ranked Orange Coast College in the second round, ends their season at 21-14...[more]

03.01.08 - Upset gives Falcons another home playoff game
The Cerritos College women’s basketball team was more than prepared to travel to Orange Coast College for a third round Southern California Regional Playoff game next Saturday. They were more than aware that the Pirates were seeded #1 in the playoffs and had already defeated the Falcons twice on the year. But, #17-seeded Antelope Valley College was looking to change those plans, and did just that, as they upset Orange Coast, 73-63 Saturday night. The end results is that Cerritos (25-8) will now host the upset-minded Marauders on March 8 at 7:00 p.m., with the winner advancing to the state championships, which will be held at the University of the Pacific on March 14-16...[more]

02.29.08 - Second half run ignites Falcons to playoff win
In the first half of their Southern California Regional Playoff game on Friday night, the Cerritos College women’s basketball team was having just as much trouble finding the basket as their opponent, Chaffey College. But the Falcons (25-8), seeded #8 in the regionals, broke out in the second half and pulled away from the #9-seeded Panthers (24-8) for a 63-47 victory. With the win, Cerritos will now advance to the Region Finals and will play next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. 02.25.08 - Falcons earn first round bye; host Chaffey
After sweeping through the South Coast Conference South Division, the Cerritos College women’s basketball team earned themselves a bye in the play-in round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. The Falcons, (24-8) were seeded #8 in the playoffs and will host #9 Chaffey College (24-7) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Panthers tied for third place in the Foothill Conference. The Cerritos College women’s basketball team finished off their final opponent to post a perfect 8-0 South Coast Conference South Division record after their 82-56 win at Los Angeles Southwest College on Friday night. 02.20.08 - Falcons stay unbeaten despite lackluster game
Looking to fine tune different aspects of their game as they prepare for the Southern California Regional Playoffs, the Cerritos College women’s basketball team waited until the final 10 minutes of their South Coast Conference South Division game at Los Angeles Harbor College on Wednesday night to find their pace. 02.13.08 - Eighth straight win by Falcons secures title
The Cerritos College women’s basketball team assured themselves at least a share of the South Coast Conference South Division championship on Wednesday night, as they defeated Long Beach City College, 86-41. The win by the Falcons (22-8 overall, 6-0 SCC South) was their eighth in a row, while the Vikings slipped to 5-20 on the year and 1-4 in divisional play. The Cerritos College women’s basketball team remained undefeated in the South Coast Conference South Division play after posting a 75-44 win over El Camino College at The Aviary on Friday night. The big win was the fifth in as many tries in divisional play for the Falcons, who improved to 5-0 in the South Division and 21-8 overall. The Warriors dropped to 10-15 and 3-2. 02.06.08 - Team dominates Compton, 79-55
The Cerritos College women’s basketball team received a welcomed surprise in their 79-55 South Coast Conference crossover win over Compton College on Wednesday night. Sophomore guard Tiffany Wilson (Mayfair HS), who missed the last six games due to an injury, returned to the lineup and was able to contribute in limited time on the court. Freshman forward Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS) scored 21 points and added 10 rebounds to lead the Cerritos College women’s basketball team to a 71-55 South Coast Conference South Division win over Los Angeles Southwest College on Friday night. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Falcons, who improved to 19-8 overall and 4-0 in divisional play after the end of the first round, while the Cougars fell to 4-10, 2-2. The Cerritos College women’s basketball team won their fourth game in a row, and eighth in their last nine tries, with a 74-26 decision over Los Angeles Harbor College on Wednesday night. With the win, the 10th ranked Falcons are now 18-8 overall and lead the South Coast Conference South Division with a 3-0 record. As for the Seahawks, they dropped to 8-9 on the year and 1-2 in divisional play. The Cerritos College women’s basketball team had four players score in double-figures and recorded an easy 73-35 South Coast Conference South Division win over Long Beach City College on Wednesday night. 01.18.08 - Tough defense allows Falcons to cruise
The Cerritos College women’s basketball team used a swarming defense to shut down El Camino College in the second half of their South Coast Conference South Division opener at El Camino on Friday night. The Falcons (16-8, 1-0) outscored the Warriors (7-13, 0-1), 35-13 in the second half and cruised to a 66-35 win. 01.16.08 - Sluggish performance still results in win
Aside from two scoring bursts on the night, the Cerritos College women’s basketball team didn’t play as well as they had been in recent games. However, they were still able to register a 54-41 South Coast Conference crossover win at East Los Angeles College on Wednesday night. The win, their fourth in five games, improved the Falcons record to 15-8 on the season, while the Huskies fell to 6-13. 01.11.08 - Cerritos unable to catch Mt. San Antonio
After their 79-70 win over 4th-ranked Pasadena City College on Wednesday night, the Cerritos College women’s basketball team had their sights set on knocking off the top-ranked team in the state, Mt. San Antonio, on Friday night. After playing the Mounties (21-1) close for the first 35 minutes of the game and trailed 54-48, the Falcons (14-8) saw Mt. SAC close out the game by outscoring Cerritos, 19-7 to record a 73-55 win. 01.09.08 - Falcons post upset win over Pasadena City
Cerritos College sophomore forward Maltresa Neely (Downey HS) has a knack for showing up for big games during her career with the Falcons. None was more evident than her performance in helping lead the Falcons to a 79-70 win over #4-ranked Pasadena City College on Wednesday night. Neely scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half and also led all players with 12 rebounds, as the team posted their first win over the Lancers (18-3) since 2001. Cerritos (14-7) will get another chance to knock off a high ranked team, as they travel to face two-time defending state champion Mt. 01.04.08 - Second half surge leads to 26-point win
The Cerritos College women’s basketball team found the beginning of their South Coast Conference crossover game against Los Angeles City College on Friday night a little slow in getting their engines running. But, once they did, the Falcons (13-7) ran like a well-oiled machine, as they posted a 77-51 win over the Cubs (3-12). 12.29.07 - Cerritos rebounds to win consolation title
After a horrendous showing in the first round of the Fullerton Tournament, the Cerritos College women’s basketball team rebounded to record two straight wins and capture the consolation championship on Saturday. After their 87-54 loss to Palomar College, the team picked up wins over Santa Monica College (69-65) and San Mateo College (71-47) to improve their season record to 12-7. Cerritos College sophomore forward Maltresa Neely (Downey HS) tied her own single season record for most blocked shots in a game, as she swatted away eight in the team’s 74-58 non-conference win at Riverside College on Friday night. 12.19.07 - Women hold on for big win over Santa Ana
The Cerritos College women’s basketball team converted four of six free throws in the final minutes of their non-conference game at Santa Ana College on Wednesday night to record a 68-63 victory. The win by the Falcons improved their season mark to 9-6, while the Dons dropped their third in a row and are now 9-5 on the year. The win was also a big one for Cerritos, as the Dons defeated talented Ventura College earlier in the season in a tournament championship game...[more]

12.17.07 - Cerritos drops final two in tourney
After their 71-61 overtime win over Chaffey College in the first round of the Orange Coast Classic Tournament over the weekend, the Cerritos College women’s basketball team was faced with an opponent that defeated them nine days earlier. The Falcons, who suffered a 76-61 loss to top-ranked Orange Coast College at home a week and a half ago, were defeated 72-60 by the Pirates in the semi-finals. Then, in the third place game, Cerritos (8-6) was beat by College of the Canyons, 71-68. The team will now travel to Santa Ana College on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game...[more]

12.07.07 - Slow start results in loss to OCC
When playing against the top-rated team in the state, the last thing you want to do is find yourself behind early in the game. That’s exactly what happened to the Cerritos College women’s basketball team on Friday when they hosted Orange Coast College. The Falcons saw their season record drop to 7-4 after the Pirates (11-1) posted a 76-61 win after jumping out to a 17-point halftime lead. 12.01.07 - Falcons win one at Sequoias Tournament
Heading into the College of the Sequoias Tournament over the weekend, the Cerritos College women’s basketball team was boasting a 6-1 record and a Top 10 ranking in the state. However, that ranking will change a little after two close losses to go along with one win. The Falcons (7-3) opened with a tough 61-58 setback to Solano College, followed by a 57-44 win against Porterville College. On the final day, the team dropped a 55-51 decision to Santa Barbara City College. 11.21.07 - Cerritos pulls away from Cypress
When the Cerritos College women’s basketball team opened up a 31-21 lead in the first half in their non-conference home game against Cypress College on Wednesday night, they felt as though it might be a lead they could build upon. But, after the Chargers got to within 36-34 by halftime, the Falcons knew they needed to regroup in order to fight off a team looking for their first win of the season. Cerritos did just that, as they scored the first 16 points of the second half and cruised to a 77-54 victory. 11.18.07 - Falcons rebound from loss to win next two
The Cerritos College women’s basketball team bounced back from a first round loss at the Glendale Tournament over the weekend to win their next two games and capture the consolation championship. The Falcons (5-1) will now host Cypress College in their home opener at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. In the first round, Cerritos dropped a 60-51 decision to Fullerton College, and then came back on consecutive days to defeat Los Angeles Southwest College (75-46) and Antelope Valley College (65-54)...[more]

11.10.07 - Women open season with tournament title
Last season, the San Diego Mesa Tournament wasn’t very kind to the Cerritos College women’s basketball team. Although they reached the championship game of the tournament, by the time it was over, the Falcons had lost two of their starters for the season. This year, the team came out of the tournament with as many losses as they did injured players – zero. Cerritos (3-0) swept through all three opponents to capture the tournament championship. The Falcons will now enter the Glendale Tournament this weekend and open with Fullerton College at 1:00 p.m. on Friday...[more]
