After leading her team to an
undefeated South Coast
Conference championship and
berth into the state
tournament, Cerritos College
women's basketball coach
Karen Welliver
was named the Southern
California Coach of the
Year. Welliver, in her 26th
season as the Falcon head
coach, is one of only
five California Community
College women's basketball
coaches to win over 500
games. She led Cerritos to a
26-9 record on the year, as
the Falcons were seeded #8
in the regional playoffs and
advanced to the Elite Eight
before being eliminated by
Foothill College in the
quarterfinals.
During her tenure with
the Falcons, Welliver has
posted a 551-274 record with
nine conference
championships and seven
trips to the state
championships. Included in
winning the conference
championship, Welliver was
named the conference's Coach
of the Year for the fifth
time in her career, while
seven of her players earned
all-conference recognition.
In a remarkable show of
consistency, Welliver had
led her team to either a
conference championship or
second place conference
finish in 17 of the last 19
years, while they reached
the post-season for the 16th
year in a row this year and
21st time in the last 22
years.
