Cerritos
College sophomore forward
Maltresa Neely (Downey HS)
tied her own single season record for
most blocked shots in a game, as she
swatted away eight in the team’s 74-58
non-conference win at Riverside College
on Friday night. With the victory, the
Falcons are now 10-6 on the season,
while the Tigers fell to 6-10.
In her freshman season, Nelly
blocked eight shots in a game, and
matched the total in the game against
the Tigers. In the first half alone,
Neely scored 16 points, grabbed six
rebounds and blocked five shots in just
15 minutes of play. She went on to
finish with a season-high 29 points and
eight rebounds, to go along with her
eight rejections. The Falcons were
playing the game without sophomore guard
Tiffany Wilson (Mayfair HS),
and Cerritos responded with a huge win.
It was a quick start by the Falcons
that helped them along in the victory,
as they exploded out to a 14-1 lead with
13:28 left in the first half and was up,
41-25 with less than a minute remaining
in the first half. The big advantage was
maintained into the second half, and
swelled to 71-51 with 5:04 left in the
game and Cerritos never trailed in the
contest.
In addition to the play of Neely,
freshman
Rachel Butler (Calvary Chapel HS)
came off the bench and hit 5-of-6 shots
en route to 12 points, along with five
rebounds and three assists, while
freshman guard
Arielle McClellan (Paramount
HS) stepped in for Wilson and scored
12 points to go along with six rebounds.
Sophomore forward
Genesis Lewis (Paramount HS)
was the fourth player to score in
double-figures, as they finished with 10
points and eight rebounds.
