Freshman
forward
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS)
scored 21 points and added 10 rebounds
to lead the Cerritos College women’s
basketball team to a 71-55 South Coast
Conference South Division win over Los
Angeles Southwest College on Friday
night. The victory was the fifth in a
row for the Falcons, who improved to
19-8 overall and 4-0 in divisional play
after the end of the first round, while
the Cougars fell to 4-10, 2-2. Cerritos
will now host Compton College in a
conference crossover game at 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday night.
Along with the play
of Taylor, the Falcons got double-digit
scoring from three other starters, with
sophomore forward
Maltresa Neely (Downey HS)
joining Taylor in registering a
double-double with her 11 points and 10
rebounds, while she also added seven
assists and five steals. Sophomore
forward
Genesis Lewis (Paramount HS)
had one of her best games of the season,
scoring 19 points and pulling down seven
rebounds, while freshman guard
Arielle McClellan (Paramount
HS) contributed 11 points and five
rebounds.
The first half was close from
beginning to end, with the Falcons
holding a 38-34 lead. But it was the
aggressive second half play by Cerritos
that allowed them to slowly build their
lead and finish off the Cougars.
After a Taylor basket with 18:06
left in the second half put Cerritos up,
45-34, consecutive Cougar turnovers and
missed shots allowed the Falcons to go
up by 16 points. Cerritos used their
size to their advantage, as well as
their crisp passing to guide them along
in their win.
Sophomore guard
Jaquita Payne (Lynwood HS)
came off the bench to pull down nine
rebounds, while freshman guard
Rachel Butler (Calvary Chapel HS)
added six points and three rebounds
before fouling out. LA Southwest was led
by Tynequa Richard, who scored 27 points
and pulled down 16 rebounds.
