The
Cerritos College women’s basketball team
received a welcomed surprise in their
79-55 South Coast Conference crossover
win over Compton College on Wednesday
night. Sophomore guard
Tiffany Wilson (Mayfair HS),
who missed the last six games due to an
injury, returned to the lineup and was
able to contribute in limited time on
the court. Although she scored only two
points, she did dish out five assists
and ran the offense as if she had not
missed a step.
With the win, the Falcons have now
won six in a row and improved their
record to 20-8 overall, while Compton
fell to 13-11. The 20 wins by Cerritos
marks the first time since the 2003-04
season that the team won 20 games. The
team will resume divisional play on
Friday when they host El Camino College
at 5:30 p.m.
With such a convincing win, the team
had several outstanding performances,
with the best coming from freshman
forward
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS)
who scored 20 points and connected on a
pair of three-pointers. On the night,
five players scored in double figures,
with sophomore forward
Genesis Lewis (Paramount HS)
and freshman guard
Arielle McClellan (Paramount
HS) each accounting for 13 points
and five assists. The duo also combined
to pull down 13 rebounds.
The Falcons ran the fast break
perfectly, as they forced 23 Compton
turnovers, while sharp passes enabled
them to register 23 assists on 33
baskets. Cerritos saw their lead
continue to swell with each possession,
as the Lady Tartars had no answer for
the high percentage shots they were
allowing.
Sophomore forward
Maltresa Neely (Downey HS)
finished with 11 points and four
rebounds, while freshman guard
Rachel Butler (Calvary Chapel HS)
added 11 points and eight rebounds off
the bench. Sophomore guard
Colleen Cooley (Paramount HS)
checked in with five rebounds, four
assists and three steals in the win.
