The
Cerritos College women’s basketball team
assured themselves at least a share of
the South Coast Conference South
Division championship on Wednesday
night, as they defeated Long Beach City
College, 86-41. The win by the Falcons
(22-8 overall, 6-0 SCC South) was their
eighth in a row, while the Vikings
slipped to 5-20 on the year and 1-4 in
divisional play. Cerritos will now
travel to Los Angeles Southwest College
next Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
Although the team was
leading by a big margin from the early
stages of the game, it was business as
usual for the Falcons, who continued to
work hard on defense and finished their
fast breaks. Knowing they need to stay
sharp, as they prepare for the
post-season, the Falcons limited their
mistakes to just 10 turnovers on the
night, while they drained nine
three-pointers in the win.
All five starters scored in
double-digits, with sophomore forward
Genesis Lewis (Paramount HS)
leading the team with 13 points. It was
balance that the team looked to achieve,
and they accomplished it, with sophomore
forward
Maltresa Neely (Downey HS)
adding 12 points, seven rebounds and
four assists. Additionally, freshman
forward
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS)
and freshman guard
Arielle McClellan (Paramount
HS) each scored 11 points, with
sophomore guard
Tiffany Wilson (Mayfair HS)
posting a double-double with 10 points
and 10 rebounds.
As a team, the Falcons had 21
offensive rebounds and out-rebounded the
Vikings, 54-34, while all 12 players in
uniform had at least one rebound. The
trio of
Anna Soltis (Norwalk HS),
Colleen Cooley (Paramount HS)
and
Rachel Butler (Calvary Chapel
HS) each scored seven points, while
Cooley dished out six assists and Butler
pulled down seven rebounds.
For the Vikings, they were led by
Dijon Franklin, who scored 11 points,
while Cristina Lajkowitz led all players
with 11 rebounds.
