02.25.08 - FALCONS EARN FIRST ROUND BYE; HOST CHAFFEY

After sweeping through the South Coast Conference South Division, the Cerritos College women’s basketball team earned themselves a bye in the play-in round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. The Falcons, (24-8) were seeded #8 in the playoffs and will host #9 Chaffey College (24-7) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Panthers tied for third place in the Foothill Conference. The winner of the game will play March 1 at 7:00 p.m. against the winner of the #1-seeded Orange Coast (29-3) game, who play against an opponent to be determined.

This will be the second time the Falcons and Panthers will be facing each other, with Cerritos posting a 71-61 overtime win in the first round of the Orange Coast Tournament back in December. In that game, Falcon sophomore forward Maltresa Neely (Paramount HS) drained a three-pointer with 1:37 remaining to give Cerritos a 56-54 lead. But after the Panthers went up by one on a trey of their own, freshman guard Arielle McClellan (Paramount HS) drained one of two free throws with 24 seconds left to tie the game and send it to overtime. Chaffey had a chance to win in regulation, but missed three shots in the final three seconds.

In the extra stanza, McClellan gave the Falcons a 62-58 lead when she hit a three-pointer and went on to score eight of the team’s 14 points. She finished the night with a season-high 17 points, while adding six rebounds off the bench, while freshman forward Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS) hauled down a season-high 17 rebounds to go along with her 14 points. Sophomore guard Tiffany Wilson (Mayfair HS) finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists, with Neely checking in with eight points and seven rebounds. For the Panthers, they relied on the scoring of Christina Warren, who led all scorers with 23 points, with Tamesha Jackson adding 18 points. Chaffey also received 15 rebounds from Johnshunay Parson.

Ticket prices for the game are $8 for general admission, while students, faculty, staff, senior citizens and children 12 and under are $6.
