When the
Cerritos College women’s basketball team
opened up a 31-21 lead in the first half
in their non-conference home game
against Cypress College on Wednesday
night, they felt as though it might be a
lead they could build upon. But, after
the Chargers got to within 36-34 by
halftime, the Falcons knew they needed
to regroup in order to fight off a team
looking for their first win of the
season. Cerritos did just that, as they
scored the first 16 points of the second
half and cruised to a 77-54 victory. The
team will now enjoy a short break before
they enter the College of the Sequoias
Tournament.
After causing some
trouble with their half court trap, the
Chargers (0-5) were unable to execute it
in the second half with their missed
shots to start the second stanza.
Cerritos was able to transition into
their fast break offense and converted a
multitude of layups and second chance
baskets to pull away. It wasn’t until
7:59 had passed in the second half that
Cypress would score their first basket.
Freshman forward
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS)
was a force in the first half, scoring
all 11 of her points, while she led the
team with 11 rebounds. She, along with
her teammates were instrumental in
out-rebounding Cypress, 62-28, with 25
of the boards coming on the offensive
end. Sophomores
Genesis Lewis (Paramount HS)
and
Tiffany Wilson (Mayfair HS)
also had huge games for Cerritos, with
Lewis pulling down 10 rebounds to go
with her nine points and three assists.
Wilson helped break the half-court trap
the Chargers put on them in the first
half and contributed a team-high 15
points, along with eight rebounds, three
assists and three steals.
Cypress was able to stay close in
the first half with long range jumpers,
with Sequana Norris and Michelle Salemi
each draining a pair of three-pointers.
But the shots didn’t fall in the second
half, and the Chargers ended up shooting
27% (17-of-26) from the field and made
just 3-of-14 from three-point range in
the second half. Norris and Tara Smith
led the way for Cypress with 11 points
each, while Candyce Carlberg added 10
points.
