The Cerritos
College women's basketball team fought back from a
second-half 10-point deficit in their non-conference
game at home against Santa Ana College on Wednesday
night, but couldn't get the shot they needed in the
latter part of the game. The end result was a 64-60
loss that dropped the team to 6-7 on the year, while
the Dons improved to 4-11. The Falcons will now
compete in the Orange Coast Tournament and open
against Cuesta College at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
With two chances
to tie the game at 57 in the final two minutes, the
Falcons missed a layup and after a defensive stop,
turned the ball over the Santa Ana. In the final
1:09 of the game, the Dons received a basket by
Danielle Leigh, while they converted 5-of-6 free
throws to seal the victory.
It looked like the
game was going to get out of reach when Cerritos
fell behind 50-40 with 7:32 remaining. However, a
basket and free throw by sophomore
Mercedes
Taylor (Gahr HS), along with a
three-pointer by freshman
Raven Tripp
(John Glenn HS) got the team to within
50-46. The Dons answered with a trey from Jessika
Korzelius, but after a three-point play from
freshman
Vannesa
Faagata (Paramount HS) and a
three-pointer by Taylor and the Falcons were within
57-55.
But turnovers and
missed scoring opportunities seemed to follow the
team all night, as they shot just 20-of-59 (34%)
from the field and turned the ball over 22 times.
Additionally, the Dons out-rebounded Cerritos,
45-39, with 20 of those caroms coming on the
offensive end.
Taylor led all
scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds, with Faagata
(14 points, eight rebounds) and freshman guard
Maleta
Daughtery (Redondo HS), who
scored 14 points to go with four rebounds and four
steals, also finishing in double-figures. Santa Ana
had five players in double-figures, with Korzelius
and Barbie Toscano (nine rebounds) leading them with
15 each.
