For the Cerritos
College women's basketball team, they are showing
the ability to rebound from a tough loss and come
back with a big win. The Falcons opened the
Fullerton Tournament with a 59-56 win over the host
Hornets, but followed that with a disappointing
64-42 loss to defending state champion Mt. San
Antonio College. In the third place game, the team
shot 52% and scored a season-high 95 points to
defeat Riverside College, 95-63. With the two wins,
the Falcons are now 11-8 on the season. They get
another look at the Tigers when they travel to
Riverside for a 5:30 p.m. game on Saturday.
In the opening win
over Fullerton, the team withstood some poor outside
shooting (8-of-22 from three-point range), but did
get 18 points and eight rebounds from sophomore
forward
Mercedes
Taylor (Gahr HS), who
converted 7-of-14 shots, including a 4-for-5 day
from beyond the arc. Freshman guard
Maleta
Daughtery (Redondo HS) matched
Taylor's 18 points by netting a trio of
three-points, while adding seven boards. The Falcons
distributed the ball well, as six of the eight
players had at least two assists, with sophomore
guard
Rachel
Butler (Calvary Chapel HS) and
freshman guard
Cherish
Sanchez (Norwalk HS) each
dishing out three.
The shooting
struggles took a new low in the loss to the
Mounties, as the Falcons missed all 10 of their
three-pointers, while they shot just 22% from the
field altogether. Taylor did convert 7-of-17 shots
to finish with a team-high 17 points and added five
rebounds, with Butler hauling down a team-high eight
rebounds, but failed to score. Sanchez did
contribute nine points in a starting role, while
freshman guard
Raven Tripp
(John Glenn HS) chipped in with six points.
Sophomore guard
Cecily
Garcia (St. Joseph HS)
recorded four assists and four rebounds.
Everything started
to click in the game against Riverside, as five
players scored in double figures, with Sanchez
scoring a season-high 18 points, which included
12-of-14 from the free throw line. Cerritos went to
the free throw line 45 times, thanks to 30 Tiger
fouls, which saw four players foul out. Tripp led
the team with a season-high 19 points, while she hit
four three-pointers and also passed out four
assists. As for Taylor, she contributed 16 points
and seven rebounds, with Butler posting a
double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Garcia
also played a solid game, registering 12 points, six
assists and five rebounds.
