On the strength of
their 58-56 win over El Camino College on Wednesday
night, the Cerritos College women's basketball team
now sits atop the South Coast Conference South
Division with just two games remaining. The Falcons
(18-12 overall, 5-1 South Division) and Warriors
(11-16, 4-2) entered the game tied for first place.
Cerritos will now travel to Long Beach City College
for a 5:30 p.m. game on Friday before closing out
their regular season at home against ECC Compton
Center next Wednesday.
A seven-point lead
(48-41) with 8:47 remaining turned into to a 48-48
tie after the Warriors scored seven points in a row.
But a three-pointer from freshman guard
Maleta
Daughtery (Redondo HS) gave
the Falcons a 53-50 lead that held up despite El
Camino getting to within 57-56 after a Jeminy Afusia
basket with 1:21 remaining. Sophomore forward
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS) made
one of two free throws with 13.5 seconds left to
close out the scoring. The Warriors did have one
last shot at winning the game, but missed, despite
some clock controversy after the shot.
Although they led
most of the game, the Falcons felt the pressure from
El Camino, as the score was tied seven times in the
second half, although they never lost the lead. Each
time the Warriors tied the game, Cerritos responded
with a basket.
Daughtery went on
to lead all scorers with 18 points before fouling
out with 55 seconds left in the game, while freshman
guard
Adria
Jackson (Lynwood HS) drained
all four of her three-pointers and finished with 14
points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard
Rachel
Butler (Calvary Chapel HS)
pitched in with seven points and 12 rebounds, while
Taylor pulled down 10 boards despite scoring only
six points. Sophomore guard
Cecily
Garcia (St. Joseph HS) posted
nine points, dished out five assists and had five
rebounds. Carla Shaw (14 points) and Ryan Louie (12
points) led the Warriors.
