The Cerritos
College women's basketball team clinched their
second straight South Coast Conference South
Division title on Friday night with a 69-42 win at
Long Beach City College. The Falcons (19-12 overall,
6-1 South Division) will close out their regular
season on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. when they
host ECC Compton Center. The first round of the
Southern California Regional Playoffs will take
place on February 25.
In the first half,
the Falcons took a little time getting started, but
after freshman guard
Maleta
Daughtery (Redondo HS) and
sophomore guard
Cecily
Garcia (St. Joseph HS) each
hit three-pointers, Cerritos was leading 24-11 with
8:44 remaining. Three-pointers in the second half
had a lot to do with the team pulling away from the
Vikings, especially after freshman guard
Adria
Jackson (Lynwood HS) netted
one with 15:29 left in the game to make the score,
43-28.
Garcia made all
three of her treys, as the team saw five of their
seven players in uniform hit at least one from
beyond the arc. As a result, five players scored in
double figures, while all seven had at least one
rebound and one assist.
Sophomore forward
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS) and
freshman forward
Vannesa
Faagata (Paramount HS) led the
team with 13 points each, while Taylor led the team
with 14 rebounds. As for Daughtery, she contributed
10 points and several spectacular passes to account
for her six assists, while Jackson finished with 12
points, four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore
guard
Rachel
Butler (Calvary Chapel HS) had
a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds,
while Garcia finished with nine points.
