The Cerritos
College women's basketball team closed out their
regular season with a convincing 63-39 South Coast
Conference South Division win over ECC Compton
Center at home on Wednesday night. The Falcons,
champions of the South Division, finished the
regular season with a 20-12 mark, while they went
7-1 in divisional play. The 20-win season was the
second in a row, while they won eight of their last
nine games to close out the season. Cerritos will
now find out on Monday where they are seeded in the
Southern California Regional Playoffs when they open
next Wednesday.
Even with the
24-point win over the Lady Tartars, the Falcons were
fighting for their lives midway through the second
half with the score 35-33. But a 20-5 run put some
distance between the teams, as Cerritos went on to
close out ECC Compton Center.
The start of the
run came on a three-pointer from freshman guard
Raven Tripp (John Glenn HS),
while sophomore guard
Cecily
Garcia (St. Joseph HS) also
netted one from beyond the arc. As a team, the
Falcons made six three-pointers, with one coming
from six different players.
Sophomore forward
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS) led
all scorers with 17 points and she hauled in seven
rebounds, while freshman guard
Maleta
Daughtery (Redondo HS) added
11 points, five rebounds and four assists. All eight
players had at least one rebound and assist, while
seven players scored the for the Falcons. Sophomore
guard
Rachel
Butler (Calvary Chapel HS)
chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds, with
freshman guard
Vannesa
Faagata (Paramount HS)
contributing eight points and Tripp adding seven
points, five rebounds, three assists and three
steals.
